Ok about 3 weeks ago I had to take the intake off and re do the gasket on my truck. I got that done and the truck was running just like it did before the repair.
Now I had a problem before the intake started leaking. Whenever my truck would get to 50 miles per hour it would feel like it would loosed power almost like it was cuting in and out then when it got above 50 around 55 it drove fine. And every now and then going up hills it did the same thing. I had that problem all thruout the winter. When ever it cut out it sounded like a slight clunk but but I took that to be the cutting in and cutting out of the engine.
On friday night I was driving home and got to around 50 and it started cuting in and out like it usualy did but this time more and more and the truck started loosing more and more power and went slower and slower until i got into a parking lot where it just died. I opened the hood and noticed smoke rolling from the back of the engine then looked under the truck to find my catylitic converters RED hot. I waited 20 minutes and tried to start again the truck would turn over but would not continue runing. SO i towed it home.
Okay I replaced the cats, the fuel filter, Distributor cap and rotor, and plug wires. Now the truck does not want to fire up. Any ideas?
Thank you

Matt, do you get any response at all? Spark?
I know you replaced the cats, but did you have a look at the O2 sensors?
You didn't indicate, but is it safe to assume things were running fine before and after the intake gasket job?
One other question: Have you gotten any trouble codes?

It gets spark it acts like it wants to start every now and then i get a pop out of it. The oxygen sensors are all replaced and new much easier to do with the converters off the truck.
Not any trouble codes poped up.

What steps did you go through to get it running after the gasket job?

after the gasket job i just started it and away it went.
I am going to put new plugs in it tomorrow to see if maybe they somehow fouled up when the converters turned red.
I just wasted all my battery trying to start it.

have you checked fuel pressure? I am willing to bet you have little to none.

so do you get spark to all cylinders all the time or not? knowing it pops a little isn't going to help you at all. You have to know if your spark is good or not. if its not replace Coil, ICM under distributor, and make sure you paste the ICM with thermal paste underneath.

Only half of the engine is geting spark.... Do you think it would be the distributor itself? OR more likely the icm? I put in a coil yesterday with no results.

i went out and took off my distributor cap to notice my rotor must have been hitting something it has fins broke off of it.
the distributor shaft looks to be to far back how do you adjust this?

The distributor is worn or its gear is toast.

for a little more than the price of a new one at autozone or another place. You can find one on Summit with bearings instead of bushings to support the shaft.
Either way with the issue at hand I would just replace the whole thing. Gear is not hard to replace but even so the shaft should not move back and forth much at all even with the worn gear so it does have a bit of play in the shaft/bushings as well.

Ditto, and on top of that you get a brand new ICM

well I got another distributor from another truck and now cant seem to get it timed right.
If i crank the engine to top dead center and I point the rotor torwards the number eight mark on the housing wil that make it close enough for the computer to pick up from? Im starting to get realy frustrated.

That's what I've read as the method on the Vortecs. Cam timing is important, from what I understand.

Yes, read the FAQ I spell it all out in there. Timing is derived from the crank sensor so distributor position is to prevent cross fire. Make sure you are TDC compression stroke and not TDC of intake (180 degrees off)

the issue was an old piece of plastic conduit stuck inbetween my engine block and transmision not alowing the distributor to drop all the way down.

That is a nylon sleeve, This is a common failure part. Not sure you NEED it but I would replace it. Should be able to get it for damn near free. When I build motors with power and rugged use I always get a steel sleeved shaft.
