Hi, haven't posted in a while.
I replaced the kingpins and bushes on my 53 Belair as you could wobble the front wheels when the front end was jacked up. Thekingpins and bushes seemed almost loose in place, I had to hold them there to put the c-clips in place before the dust covers etc. The wobble was worse than before. The pins and bushes I removed were a job to remove, the fit was very very tight. I am wondering if this has been reamed out before and larger bushes have been installed? I'm thinking of having them re-reamed with new oversize bushes as the insides ore scored and not in good shape. Anyone have experience of this?
I also just had the dteering idler arm reamed and is now rebuilt, but still got the wobble on the wheels....

Something I forgot to add is that I have 2" dropped uprights on this car, they were on it when I bought the car - not sure if these require slightly bigger bushes or not. I need to get this sorted though, I am thinking stock kingpins, oversize bushes, to fit the oversize reamed bushings. Thoughts?

What I meant to say was the uprights seemed worn/scored, would these be better reamed out and bushes made, or replace the uprights?
Seems you can't modify a post you made on here, or delete a post - how stupid.

Hi Rob,
I rebuilt the front end of my 54 Bel Air last summer, including the king pins. I got new king pins from that national chevy association. Both the pins and the bushings went into the knuckles easily--but with virtually no play. After rebuilding the idler arm and replacing the rod ends, there is still a bit of play in the front end--but it's all in the steering box. Everything else is rock solid. If you have play in the king pins, then I'd say they must have been reamed, or they are so worn as to be unusable. Good luck,
Scott A.

Did you look at the front end rebuild by DZAUTO? It's at the top of this forum in the stickys.
See if it helps.

I did Keith, yes. Very informative, excellent sticky. I have measured the old bushes which I took out, outside diameter is 27.15mm or 1.0695", inner is 22.15mm or 0.8715". The new floating bushes are I have been told 26.75mm or 1.053" outer diameter with an internal diameter of 21.99mm or 0.8665".
This would indicate the bushings have been machined/reamed at some point and oversize bushes have been made. Guess that is what I am going to have to do, or get a set of replacement stock spindles. Anyone know where I could get these? I have seen drop forged new ones on eBay but not sure I want to drop $200 + shipping to the UK if they don't come recommended. Cheers.

There's a pair on Fleabay right now. Put in 1954 Chevy spindles. Going for $80, or buy it now $100.

I must have missed those 54 spindles. There is someone on ebay selling remanufactured forged spindles, these are $220 and are through Thompsons Garage, does anyone know anything about these/recommend or otherise, them? Does anyone else produce remanufactured ones of good quality? Thanks.
