Hi Guys,
While my baby is at the body shop for the next two months, I'll be taking the items that need re-chroming the most, to my local plating shop. So, I need some tips on how to get the top of the console and the chrome strips that go around the tops of the bucket seats off so I can have them re-plated.
Thanks for any tips,
Greg

Greg,
BE VERY, VERY careful with the top of that console as it is pot-metal. Most chromers cannot plate that without destroying it. It needs to be sent to someone who can plate pot-metal. The process is a bit different. Also, the 4 speed indicator plate will need to be removed and may get destroyed removing it. Unless that console top is really bad, you may want to consider leaving well enough alone! I have seen too many 1963 and 1965 consoles destroyed by platers that thought they knew what they were doing. If someone does know what they are doing, that console top will probably be about 750-1000 bucks to plate. Anyone who tells you different, stay away from. The hood grill on my SS427 cost me about $1,100 bucks to do just as food for thought. Very labor intensive buddy.

Couldn't help but notice the 7g tach in the dash... Was that original to your car? Tom

Donny Speaks,
Greg Listens...
Thanks very much for the warning my friend, I think I can live with the console the way it is.

Tom,
I'm lucky enough to own one of the Generation 1 396s with the L78 396/425 hp. I've attached a shot of my car the day I drove her home from my parents' house, where my Dad parked her in 1981.

His tach is correct as his car is a rare solid lifter BB car! 6g red line, 7g tach. A rare animal indeed!

That's what our freind Mark at "S's" told me on Friday Donny, I ordered about $2500 worth of stuff to go with the new paint job. Now I just need to find an air field or a track where I can let my 18 year old daughter practice driving my '65 this summer, lol

Also, be very very careful not to break the little plastic dividers at the rear of the lower console below the light. If they are not broken already, they are real fragile and nearly impossible to find unbroken in used consoles.
