I ,like others, have always had issues with the rear seal leaking. I am going to be putting my engine back together and would like to see if some one has had better luck. Its been a few years for me also and dont know if maybe I am missing some thing. Thanks

Do not align the seal seem with the block and main cap, offset the seal a little, you can use a very small dab of sealant as well.

That and use the best metal-core Felpro seal you can get for your motor. I have had fewer leaks with the metal core versions than I have with the soft core ones.

50% of the time, it's not the seal that's leaking, it's oil coming out from between the rear main cap and the block. It does this, mostly because there's oil under pressure from the oil pump there.
Before installing the main cap, paint a small track of sealant on the flat surface from the crank seal to the pan seal (Permatex aviation gasket cement is good for this bit).
Also, is the journal where the seal will run pre lubed (with oil if it'll be running soon or grease if it'll be sitting a while?

The problem I have seen with offsetting the rear seal is an engine came in that another shop built and the seal was offset and when the rear cap was installed it peeled the back of the seal off and stacked up under the rear main cap.
Personally I have never offset a seal yet as GM has sent million of engines out the door and none of there sealwere offset that I know of.
I use a good seal not a cheap one, silicon so far no issues.

I just did an engine ...I never had problems with seals in the past other than a drop or two leak depending crank condition etc.
So this time I offset the seal slightly as many guys claim they do......It leaked enough so I had to replace it.Set the second seal "even", no leaks.

Ya know, I was a line tech for a Chevy dealership(s) for a long time and that rear seal was not as big of a problem as it has been made out to be by the magazines and just general folk lore. I didn’t replace any more of those than I did the freeze plugs between the engine and trans or even front pump seals in transmissions. There are a lot of things besides the rear main seal that can leak back there and it all ends up on or in the flywheel inspection cover so it looks like a rear main seal leak when you see a spot in your driveway. I am not saying the reputation is not deserved but it’s not like all of them leak. I have never offset the seal in any of them and never had a recheck.

IVE installed some rear seals with the ends offset and some flush, Ive never had one leak in 40 plus years, if you have the seal leak its been my experience looking at engines Ive repaired that about 80% of the leaks are due to improper installation and 20% due to rarely if ever doing oil changes so wear was the root cause of the leak due to sludge in the oil

I have used permatex ultra gray on corners of rear main cap seal area. Then fel pro black pan gaskets with ultra gray at front and rear corners. Recently used a 1 piece pan gasket from milodon , I probably just got a bad one cause it definetly leaked . Hope that helps

No ,I considered those but ended up buying the milodon #41000 oil pan gasket. It is 1 pc black. As I mentioned it definetly did leak.It did fit nicely in my trash can though.  So I pulled it and went to the fel pro 4 pc black. The only thing i could figure is the Milodon has these steel sleeves for each hole (to insure you don't overtighten)
