I always drove my 38 51 and 52 at those speeds, never a complaint from the 216. A swap to a 49 thru 53 PG rear end would give you 3:55s and that certainly helps with engine speeds. The 216 will pull those gears very well. I have them in the 52 with a 216 and only note that I shift into second gear a little more around town.

Another "Welcome to CT"
You will need a Powerglide torque tube assy from a 50-54 rearend. Here is one of the posts about the change over.

got to ask on your post you said 49-53 pg offers 3:55 gears isn't it the same in 54 or is there a different gear in there pgs

I also have a stock 48 Fleetline, with a 216 (and I'm also new around here).

My car pulls 55 to 60 easily, and it currently is at a "vintage car mechanic" going over all mechanicals, including new brakes, shocks and anything else to ensure a safe ride. The engine is 43,000 miles young.
