Going to replace the firewall insulation pad on my '64 Impala SS. Most I've found are not truly original (such as not being double sewn on the bottom). However, I did find them at LGC, but they have two options. I called and they could not tell me what the differences were, except one is molded and one is not. However, the molded one is 2 1/2 times as expensive as the non molded one.

Wondering if anyone has used these and what the differences really are? What your opinion would be about which one would work best. Would like to get the non molded one for $45, but if the molded option is truly better, guess I could go for the $110.

Thanks for any suggestions and opinions.

I would call those yokels back at LGC and ask again. If they still insist they don't know, ask for a supervisor. If that doesn't get results, ask for Bob Snowden - I think he's still running the LGC division at Eklers. They could always pull one of each and look at them. You could alway threaten them with bad press on CT

I got mine through National Impala. They invariably carry the 'good stuff' or the best available and don't mind telling you when the best available is not that good.

This is it installed. Looks exactly like the original.

I used the non molded before the better ones were available. I ruined the first one but the next try was better. Use a Windex type spray bottle of water on the face of the cardboard and let it be damp for a couple of hours before installation. Comes out better, but I'm sure, not as good as the molded one. Kind of like curving drywall.

The first one I installed was marginal, and then I got one from Phil also and it fit great. I hate to buy things twice but once I heard about the better quality/fit I did and I am glad, it looks better.

Really seems like the molded pad is the way I should go, even for the higher price. Would rather do it once and get it right, rather than mess around with the non-molded one and screw it up.

Thanks again for all the opinions expressed here.

Use the correct tool or make one for the plugs to hold them in place. Screw driver won't work as well.

Can someone tell me how much trouble it is to change out the firewall pad? Can you remove the old one as it is or do you have to take out the underside of the dash?
Any help would be appreciated.

It is a pretty good job. You need to remove all the A/C - heater boxes, which means taking apart that stuff on both sides of the firewall. Then the steering column has to come out and I think the parking brake as well. You can cheat on the steering column brace (the big chunk of metal the brake pedal hangs from) There is a tiny strip of firewall pad that goes above it, but you can just snip it and work it around.

Thanks a lot - I gusess I should have done that when the front clip was off - may not do it now even though I would like to change it out.
Thanks again

Dave, can you install the firewall pad before the carpet? If so, is it possible to get the carpet under it without doing damage to the pad? From your photo it looks like the firewall pad goes in first.

I did it pad first, carpet second. Not sure if that is correct, but it worked. The carpet is fairly flexible, so you can shove/tuck it under.

Thanks, Dave. That's the way I was thinking, but wanted to get the opinion of someone who has actually done it.
