I bought a newport one for my '46 - it was super easy to fit , took me less than an hour

Now I need to find some new wiper posts because they have a heap of slop in them

Blacky, thanks. someone else I was talking to a couple of days ago recommended the Newport motor. I'll have to recheck my components, if my links etc are good, the bolt-in motor would seem like the way to go

I bought mine off Ebay from a hotrod shop in Aliquippa,PA - JBL or JPL Hotrods or something like that , they also sold an adaptor so you could fit the original knob back onto the new switch.

I thought I read in a catalog that the sweep on the newport motor is only 90°, is that the case?

mine wipe the entire screen , I am sure they travel more than ninety degrees , although its a bit hard to tell because the posts are flogged out .

Unfortunately I cant go and check it for you because the car is sitting in Long Beach waiting for a boat ride to Australia it was meant to leave weeks ago but there is a backlog

Blacky, I talked to Walkie White of Walkie's Rod and Custom who explained that indeed the motor functions like, well, a normal motor and simply rotates, just like the vacuum original. since it's a direct bolt-in, it uses the original linkage, resulting in the same sweep.

I'm going to look at my '65 parts truck's motor and compare it to the vacuum one to see if it's easily adaptable, if not, I'll most likely get the Newport.

Blacky,

I saw your post and ended up getting a motor kit from Newport Wipers. It took less than an hour to install and was a direct bolt in replacement. Thanks for the tip!

well today I decided to try and get my wippers working I have the newport motor and switch but it just didnt work .I got nothing no movement no sound, and after tearing apart the dash to get to it I found that it wasnt grounded properly so make sure you ground it GOOD that is very important ! then after I got the motor working hooked it back up one of my wipers moved about 6 inches the other did nothing.AFTER ALL THAT ALL DANG DAY MONKYIN WITH THIS ! SO I took it back apart and came to the conclusion that the mchanism that the wipers hook onto need replaced. does anyone know if theres something im not seeing or can they be taken off and rebuilt? it would be easy to say go to chevys of the 40's and buy a new one but its about 230 bucks. any ideas thanks

well, it's part of the drive mechanism, without it that wiper isn't going to work.

jotram, sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a smarta$$. glancing at one of mine, how "bad" would depend on whether the chain is broken or has come unhooked. if you go looking for replacement towers, remember they come in left and right.

blacky, I haven't checked to see if anyone has new ones. where's the slop, could they be re-bushed?

I dont really know to be honest Larry, when I fitted the electric motor and tried them the wipers dont travel thru the same arc and dont self park in the same spot , if you grab them and move them by hand they move up and down the screen 3 or 4 inches.
