Amazing thing, fate. Or coincidence, or whatever you want to call it.
The carpenter I got to come out in the spring to do my shop extension never called me back.
All summer I debated with myself on who to call and what to do.
Well, as it happens, we went to look at a couple cars (see Test drove Malibu and Cruze post in Tip's Corner) and the young, energetic salesman (Kevin) does odd jobs on the side.
We asked him about doing this and he was interested. He would have his Dad, mainly, working on it (retired from construction work) and him helping when he could.
He'd said right off, that this was to help his Dad make some money.
So, we're giving them a shot.
It's a relatively simple job, so I'm hoping for the best.
Taking a chance, but I had a good feeling that Kevin is an up front, honest guy.
We'll see.
It has been raining all night and most of the day off and on, so it will have to dry out a bit before they can start.
The extension will be 10 X 16 or there abouts.
We just got some rough idea of the size so he can plan it out.
This will allow me to park the 55 on the north end of my shop and move the 32 into the "work" area. The 55 was just a couple feet too long to fit. I wanted to use the existing overhead door, so it has to go out at least 9ft.
A little extra room on the side will allow me to store my woodworking tools and/or steel racks or whatever and open up room in the shop area.

That's why almost my whole back yard is concrete and garage. 
Good luck with it Jeff. You can never have enough space. My garage is only 20 square feet smaller than the footprint of my house and it still isn't big enough.
I started with the structure to put a roof over my back porch and basement steps yesterday. I won't be able to get a roof on it this year, but the structure will be in place and it will only be a weekend project to finish it in the spring.

There is a space limitation because of a hill, but yeah.
With the 10' you would use 2 on a side and then split one.
The guy thinks the concrete alone may be 3 grand. 
This is another one of those: "If I'd started it myself back in the spring, I'd be done by now..."

I don't know where he got that.
I called today and got $530 delvered.
And that was the minimum 5 yard load. I calculated maybe 4 yds max and that's with a 6 inch thick slab with a 4 x 4 inch "curb".
I'm only planning a 4 inch slab.
I'll need to come up with some place, something to do with the extra yardage.
Walkway, apron, something.
Suggestions?
I called him today and one of the first things he asked me to do is price the concrete myself.
I told him I did and gave him the numbers.
He and his Dad are coming over tomorrow afternoon to "talk turkey" (left-over turkey?) on the project.

For the extra, I seem to remember a purple wagon locked down because of high water. Might not be enough for a full apron, but maybe a couple strips just the right width would get the wagon across the yard and to dry ground a bit easier.. Just don't drive off the edge!

Good idea Robert, but the whole idea behind the addition is to be able to park the 55 on the "other" end of the shop.
The building is 20 X 40 and I have a big door at each end.(because of the lay of the land)
The "other" end faces the road....and a driveway.
Easy access in and out.
That will also open up the "work area" for the 32.
After some more calculating and including footings (which I forgot about  ), I may need all of that 5 yards.

The guys came out today and we talked.
I decided to go all the way.
Full width and height, out 12 ft.
It'll up the cost, but how can you put a price on the space I'll get?
My shop will be about the same size as the house after this.

It still will be crowded. Especially since I joined the AllMetalShapers forum and saw all the cool metal shaping toys I'd like to have. 
A Pull-Max would be great. But takes up a LOT of room.

The extra footage doesn't up the cost too much. Not compared to doing the project to start with. And it will be well worth the extra room.

Reason I ask is I'm always having to move cars in and out to get room to work on a different car.
Really gets tiresome!
Did you ever get done cleaning and organizing your shop?

Yeah, Mike this was initially to be able to get the 55 in "that" end of the shop.
It's only 20' wide anyway and I'm doing the same as you. Move one out to get one in.
The new space (besides what the 55 will take up) will be for rearranging so I can hopefully have more working room.
As far as the shop cleaning...I got a start, then got off on other things.
Not to mention I will be cleaning up and find something to put away and it's like: "OK what do I do with this?"
I've tried organizing like Lowe's or someplace.
Plumbing supplies
Lumber
Tools-mechanic
Tools-woodworking
Electrical supplies
General hardware
Auto Parts
Paint/supplies
Machining supplies-drills, reamers, cutting tools etc.
And I still find something that I can't catogorize.
I tossed a LOT of junk, scrap metal, worn out parts etc.
Still, it's not done.
Guess I need to do the fill the barrel trick again.
"OHHHhh it's a useable thing, but I don't have a use for it right now......toss it...uhhhh OK."
Perhaps, just perhaps I can organize this space well and get rolling again on the rest.

Yep, two bones broken. I'm okay. Went to the docs today. They will be putting a plate on each bone hopefully Friday pending Workmans Comp approval.
As for the shop, you can never have too much room and as soon as you organize it, it starts to get unorganized. I sorted mine out back in October and it still looks like something from the show Hoarders.

Work has finally begun. They broke ground today.
They had a tough time of it digging by hand. While not frozen ground it was undisturbed soil with a layer of gravel on top. I used to park trucks there, so it's pretty solid.
The first pic really looks like it's a huge building.
And I guess to some it is. But it looks bigger than it really is.

I finally get to start my expansion soon, too. When I moved here, I had a 30'X 48' garage built but it's full. Now I need one just to store cars that are finished. We're going to put a 30'X50' next to the other one. This will also have my paint booth. I've been painting outside for the past 4 years.

The guys got here this morning and I went out to see how they were doing.
They had to remove about 4-6 inches across the section inside the footings and the ground was so compacted with clay and gravel their shovels were just bouncing off.
I thought about my monster self propelled rotor tiler and got it out.
Luckily, it fired up pretty easily even after sitting for a couple years.
It was a job even with that, but it broke up the surface about an inch at a time. Then I'd sit back and let them shovel the loose off.
Then I'd fire up the dirt monster and go over it again.
I didn't mind helping. I just couldn't sit back and let them chip away with shovels when I had a machine that could make it easier and faster.
And no, I didn't take pay away from them. They earned it, even so.
Besides, I did save a bit by them not having so many hours at it.
They'd have been going until dark and maybe not get far enough along.
As it was, they were able to get the rebar in place and leave early.
They didn't have the boards for forms, so they'll do that in the morning and call the truck.
No pics today, still looks pretty much as before, just a bigger pile of dirt around the sides.

OK! It finally stopped raining for a couple days.

Yep, that's how it was when my garage went up. I was on the schedule for a month prior and they removed took me off. It was dry at that time and right up until the week they rescheduled me for. Then it poured the beginning of the week. Of course the days they were doing the actual construction it idn't even threaten rain, but the ground was already a bog by then.
