Does the 1966 Caprice = an Impala SS with some wood grain and some other addons that made it a caprice?

Every picture I can find on a 66 Impala SS looks *identical* to my 1966 caprice. I cant find much information on them other than one thing than on the Wikipedia site it suggested that the 1966 caprice was just a impala ss with some "luxury" options.

is that true?

if so, that kicks censored. i have noticed that most caprice pic's i see have a front bench seat and do not have a middle console between 2 bucket seats. Mine does, so hopefully that makes it that much more cool (does to me for sure) and also I think it is pretty cool that i'm looking for SS parts. I know, they are the rarest and hardest to find parts but still, I usually end up with the worst version of something if i buy a item with multiple versions, and it makes me kinda jump for joy that my caprice is a little rarer than the average caprice PLUS, who doesn't love SS parts!!!! Maybe i'll just make my own emblems that say Caprice SS and freak people out

Thanks for any information regarding the two.

Both the S.S. and the Caprice are different models, trim levels or options.
My 65 Caprice was an option on the Impala 4 door hardtop only.
In 66,GM made the Caprice a model of it's own and added the 2 door Caprice and the Caprice wagon.
Caprice is luxury where the S.S.is sport.
I think I'll call yours' a Caprice Sport!
You could order them just about any way you wanted if you had enough money.
Mike.

Did someone say Caprice Sport????

I have a 66 Caprice model with bucket seats and console along with a 396 engine. The parts for the Caprice are a little harder to find and will cost a little more than some of the other parts. About 90% of the parts are interchangeable with the Impala model, but there are a few things that are different, like seat covers, vinyl top moldings, trunk lid, and emblems. The inside does have woodgrain.

No, they aren't same. The roofline is completely different bewtween the two cars--> The Caprice has a formal roof whereas the Impala SS (and regular Impala) has a semi-fastback roofline.

All 1966 full-sized Chevy interiors are similar. The seat patterns/door panels/dash trim are different between the Caprice and the Impala/Impala SS. It is cool to have buckets/console.

No need to slap "SS" emblems on it. IMO, it'll just look stupid. Again, my opinion. Be proud that you car is a Caprice. I think the 1966 Caprice 2 door is the best looking out of the 1966-1970 Caprices.

That's true. Here are two interior pics of 66 Caprices I've owned over the years.
Both 325 hp. 396's and factory 4 speeds.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I don't think it would be dumb to make a Caprice SS emblem, but seeing as you own 2 actual SS's I can see why you would think that hehe. People who own the real things usually don't like fakes. Totally understandable.

Thanks for the links, those are nice. I also have to admit, that the Caprice is a far prettier car than the impala ss IMO. I do NOT like that "fast back" look at all. And thanks for the interior pics. That bottom one is identical to my car except one thing... the console is different. Is that because mine is automatic? that part that sticks out a little towards the driver side isn't on my console. mine is just one straight console. i'm guessing that its because its auto instead of manual.

kinda sucks my caprice isn't a upgraded impala ss, but at the same time, fast backs are not my cup of tea so i'm also kinda glad it isn't a impala ss. glad to hear 90% of the parts are interchangeable and it sounds like the majority of the parts that are NOT interchangable are cosmetic, which is good because it will probably be 10 years before I can afford cosmetic upgrades. its the mechanical parts i need to match up not which color the seats are or which type of material hehe.

good info guys, and thanks again for that interior pic, that is going to help alot.

Yes that's correct. I guess the 4 speed shifter/linkage is thicker than the auto shifter and offset towards the left so they had to bump out the console. In the first Caprice I obviously installed a Hurst shifter and the second shows the stock GM shifter. Both cars had Muncie trans. I would assume the Caprice 4 speed console is very scarce.

With the exception of the "wood grain" Caprice 4 speed and automatic consoles are identical to those of an Impala SS.

the "SS" isn't an upgrade to the Caprice. Impala and Caprice were 2 seperate models. They are unique and despite the fact they share a lot of parts they are different models. IMO it would be weird to make a Caprice anything other than a Caprice. Add a big block, power windows, tilt wheel.. things that were available but don't make your Caprice something it never could've been! Just my opinion. Good luck with your build.
