1991 R3500 with a 350 and 400something trans. running TBI. 350k mi.

symptoms: it always had a cold start stalling issue, to my knowledge it's never actually stalled. well yesterday i didn't gas enough through it and it almost fell on it's face. Then something new happened. On the 5 mile drive into town, driving at low rpms, it was missing every second or so. When I came to a stop in a parking lot, it stalled. started it back up fine, once in drive it would slowly stall unless I got on the gas or blipped in neutral then drive. Parked for 10 minutes, drove another mile to get gas, it has maybe 1/16th above empty, I put in 3 gal. Drove a half mile, parked, came back out maybe 20 minutes later and it wasn't firing at all. the carb was looking really dry, so i assumed it wasn't getting fuel, hopefully the filter is clogged. went to a parts store for starting fluid and a fuel filter. sprayed a shot into the carb and it fired, so no fuel for sure. got the used filter off to find it filled with rusty gas. Put the new one on and still no start. The fuses look good, the relay is good. It seems odd to me that both pumps would die at the same time, although I can't hear them prime. that's where I'm at right now, just looking for some insight before I take it somewhere

well i just went out and unhooked the lines after the diverter valve and the pumps definitely work, at least in the left tank, 'cause fuel poured out upon turning the key. Now is it possible the line up to the throttle body is clogged? or something in the carb, sprayers?

Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but the fuel filters that I've had to change in the past, have sprayed fuel, there was no pressure when I swapped this one.

You may not get much spray changing the filter as the TBI uses low fuel pressure compared to most other fuel injection systems.

As far as no fuel if the pump is working try to hook up a pressure tester and get us a reading it will help clarify if your pressure is up to par or not.

Also it could be the pressure regulator going bad but before we assume anything or throw parts try to get us a pressure reading.

still haven't tested the pressure, but upon removing the ignition module, it's connectors were beyond rusted. replaced that with a new cap and rotor, still no start. just now used a test light on the wire from the coil to the distributor cap and there's no power. bad coil? or do i have to have someone turn the key on to get power from that.

well upon finding out that the distributor may be the culprit as it sends a signal for the injectors, found it to be very sloppy. swapped in a rebuilt unit and it runs!

sounds like it was the ignition module in the distributer was shot then. Though if the dizzy was sloppy replacing the whole thing was not a bad thing at all. Glad to hear you got it going. Thanks for letting us know.

so, am I supposed to run the engine with the ecm wire unplugged? I just unplugged it, plugged back in, disconnected/reconnected the battery and it still hesitates under load.

so, unhook tan/white connector, adjust dist., shut off engine, reconnect tan/white connector, and unhook/rehook battery? i'll have to try without a timing light later. i'm assuming it'll need retarding.

What did you end up finding that fixed things?

Glad to hear it's working.

Your earlier question about running it with the timing signal disconnected is not advisable.
