Hi again
Is it possible to install the ignition switch upside down on a 58 Impala?

I just installed a new switch, taking care to put it in the same way the original one was. I put the wires where they belonged (Red to batt, Pink to Acc and Tan to ignition).

When I looked at the diagram in both the Service Manual and the Accessory Manual, it seems the accessory is on the opposite side from where mine is.

The question is - what will happen if it is put in upside down but wired correctly?

Also, where should the little hole be for removing the lock cylinder - on top or on the bottom. This will help in deciding if its in correctly or not.

Thanks for your help
Mark

Mark - I hate to say it, but I think you'll need to do some re-wiring. Why?

Installing the switch itself upside down couldn't happen due to the (2) bezel mounting screws.

Second, I doubt the tumbler could be installed up side down fearing the cam slots just wouldn't line up. (I haven't tested this for sure, but suspect highly it wouldn't fit)

Sorry about that.

BTW - If memory serves the bottom hole frees up the tumbler.

The 58 Chevy ignitions switch P/N 1116544 does not
have a accesory position it. Lock,Off,On,Start. The 58 Chevy Taxi cab had a accesory position and the bezel shows Accesory,Off,On,Start. Taxi ignition switch P/N1116549 is the only 58 with accesory position. What switch do you have 544 or 549? Taxi bezel in picture

HI again

My Bezel says from Left to right:
Lock/Off/On/Start.

Cylinder went in fine

As for the screws on the switch housing, the hooks on the housing are open facing right (so they'll snug up when the screw is tightened). They seem to be in the same position either way and there doesn't seem to be a slot to force one direction or the other when inserted.

Thanks again
Mark

Yes they are, I didn't have a picture of the Car bezel just the Taxi bezel. I have fat fingers when I was loading the pictures.

Mark,
I have been looking a long time for the Taxi ignition switch P/N 1116549, I scored a NOS one on flea bay tonight. Now I can have a true accessory position on the wife's Brookwood 1958. I already have the restored Bezel on hand. For those that are nuts like me this is a great find for me. Couldn't have found it if not for the education that I have received from CHEVY TALK. Thanks to all.

Jens,
I will never understand what makes me lock on to something that is so weird and almost unattainable. I sure am glad to get it and will soon get it installed and give a feed back on the accessory position switch.

So does that acc switch require a different wiring harness as well?

No, it uses the same wire harness, electric plugs are the same. Bezel is different, it has Accessory position on the bezel. I will post some pictures soon of both switch's P/N 1115544 and P/N 1116549 showing the contacts and etc. along with the bezel of each kind. I am slow about things right now as I have had a little accident with my right leg.

The tumbler has to be in the locked position with a key (this might work without a key if its in the locked position). There is a small hole at the lower left side of the key opening. A wire with the same diameter needs to be inserted into that hole. You should feel a spring like action when you slightly push on the wire. While pushing on the wire try to rotate the tumbler to the left (counter clockwise). The tumbler should release with a quarter turn. I don't know if the tumbler will release without a key though but it might be worth a try.
