I purchased a 1985 chevy P-30 step van.
The frame, engine, motor and drive train are the same used in the P-30 mobile homes.
The mobile home has a much lower GVW rating than the step van which in PA cost much more to register each year. Is the different rating simply because the step van can be loaded with stuff? Also, where can I find informaition and parts for this step van?

Step Vans are by classification heavy work vehicles - so they will be heavily loaded and travel on the roads continuously. RVs however, are lightly loaded and (commonly) very rarely used on the roadways.
Its a combination of those two - how much load they carry plus the amount of time they spend on the road - with the road time being the most important.
Forget trying to get it reclassified, unless you are willing to completely build it out as a home built RV.
There isn't much out there on the web for the step vans - you can still get a lot of the frame and drivetrain parts, but you won't find much for the body.

Vaughn's right!
I own a 79,P-30,with a 292/4-speed.
Aluminum body.
Pretty much the same drivetrain/suspension as the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.
Good body parts are hard to find.
Also,my van has to be registered as a commercial vehical, where my G-30 motorhome is registered as a recreational/private vehical.
But,I got em this time. The vans an antique,so I use classic plates! One time cost here in Ms.!

I thought of registering the step van as an antique. 25 years old vehicles in PA can be registered as antique with a one time registration as long as there are not modifications. Does the antique plate come with restrictions?

It is unlikely that they will let you skirt the issue like that (lots of contractors with old work trucks attempt this to save on registration fees). You can always try it though.
