I mocked up a few boards just to see what it will look like.

I looked on one of the boxes the wood came in and noticed the shipping date. I've had this stuff laying around for 9 years!

Well then you saved some cash. I am thinking it was a lot cheaper 9 years ago.

Yeah, no kidding! I just visited Mar-K's site $100.00 more today. Same with the moldings. In 2005 I priced them at just under $400.00. Today they're asking $495.00. Good quality stuff though!

I took my windshield out so I could change the rotten gasket. It actually turned back to petroleum form. What fun that was to clean out. Also there wasn't any rust (except surface rust) like some Know it all tried to tease me with as I knew there wasn't any. Had to get rid of that tar at the top. I have a feeling this truck was kept indoors. Since the gasket melted it protected all the metal underneath. I also coated the lip with Duplicolor Bed Coating. Should be good for along time.
Look Ma... Or should I say Greg. NO rust. hahahahahaha

Coated.

You should use an epoxy seam sealer on those spots. It is designed to seal up places where the panels overlap or on welded seams. Get a type that has UV resistant chemicals.

Bed liner is fine in it's intended application, but it isn't as good where seams are. It can tend to trap moisture at the seam, which causes it to rust out, instead of protecting it from rust which is why most people do this in the first place.

To use bedliner in an application (like underneath the cab), it first must have a primer (like an epoxy primer) applied, and it must be carefully prepped so that rust doesn't form (use a metal rust killer of some sort). It isn't designed to be used it in the way you are trying to use it.

Epoxy primer also accepts paint more readily. If you want to use bedliner, it needs to be tinted to match your color, because you can't really pain over it successfully. The bedliner will probably cause the color to flake off, because it tends to skin over hard enough that paint won't stick to it. Bedliner is supposed to be resistant to chemicals, so painting over it and expecting a chemical bond to form will result in paint failure.

Seam sealers are specifically designed to protect seams, and if you get the right type of seam sealer, that will include exposure to UV rays/weather. Two part (all epoxies are at least two part, otherwise it isn't an epoxy) epoxy seam sealer will set up so that it is extremely strong, difficult to remove and will prevent rust from forming. This is especially important in the drip rail on our trucks, they have seam sealer in them from the factory. Seam sealer has advanced a LOT since they used it in the 60-66 trucks, and it is more capable now to handle that kind of constant exposure to weather and resisting rust.

Been buisy!
Got the cross braces cleaned and coated with POR15. I started working on the wheel tubs.

Kinda ran out of daylight tonight but Mrs. Hilander and I managed to get everything started. All the cross braces are attached and the bed is bolted to the frame.

Gearing up for a productive weekend! My brother in law, my son in law and I are going to team up for a big push! Hopefully get the Bed sides and the tubs cleaned, pounded out and POR-15'ed. We're also going to fit the aux fuel tanks to the bed and start on cleaning those up and mounting them with sending units.

Passenger side bed - cleaning rust and dirt, pounding out dents and straightening sheet metal.

Front panel needs lots of help. All I could do was straighten it out, clean the rust off the bottom edge POR15 the mating surfaces and get it ready to assemble. I ordered a new one from Classic Trucks but it's got a 3 week lead time.

I started on the saddle tanks. I'll get them fitted tomorrow.

Driver's side cleaned and ready to POR15 the mating surfaces.

Got the tubs pounded out and cleaned up.

Now everything gets de-greased, pressure washed, treated with"metal ready" and POR15'ed.

so, after diagnosing charging issues... ordering and installing a new voltage regulator...

I had to replace my heater core again, so I took lots of photos.

I actually dont even use that tank. Just the behind the seat tank. The original owner that i bought the truck from said he has never used the side tank and probably wouldnt be a good idea unless i replaced it or cleaned the old one out.

In the past month or so :

had new exhaust put on by the professionals.

had a oil leak with the nylon hose for the PSI gauge, the hardest part of fixing that was getting to it, it is next to the distributor on a SBC and sorta under that indented area in the firewall.

( NOTE : thanks for the tip, Vaughn)

Noticed the diff. was leaking, I *think* from the gasket cover... so I replaced it today, still have to top off the fluid. The instructions on the goop box said to let cure for 24 hours... so here are a few in progress action shots:

Today :

3 pics - rear axle differential gasket cover replacement - in progress shots

Happy riding and wrenchin' folks,

I gave it a big hug and let it know about my current lack of knowledge on fixing it and cars in general.

Also I'm still trying to figure out what gender it is. I'm still looking. maybe I will even lift its tailpipe under there or check its rear axle to find out.

I hope my truck is a girl. A sexy girl. Which I think we can all agree that our trucks are.

i guess i'll name it after the girl who used to own the truck.
