The whole system holds ten - eleven quarts, but regardless you want to check the level several times as you are adding, to not over fill, or under fill.

My question is how do you get the fluid out of the converter?

Have seen on the amsoil site how to replace your fluid by disconnecting one line out from your trans while having the engine going. It pumps the old fluid out and stop when you see the new fluid come thru.

You can also roll your torque converter allowing the fluid to escape. If you run it out of fluid watch your temp and becareful as the heat will build quickly.

Drop the pan, clean it real good, change the filter, reinstall the pan and torque the pan bolts to 95" (INCH) pounds. You will refill using between 5-6 quarts. Dont worry about trying to empty the converter. Service your trans every 25-30k miles.

IMO it's almost impossible to get all of the fluid out of the converter unless you're a converter reman operation and you're splitting them open. The only way you can get most of it out is to remove it from the trans, and that won't get all of it.

The only way to empty the converter short of drilling a hole in it is to pump the fluid out the cooler line using the engine (running in park) while adding new fluid till you have replaced all the fluid. Be prepared to waste some fluid.

I bought a replacement cooler line at the local Napa for $8. I cut the length in half. Then I bought some clear PVC tubing and slipped it on the end of the cut alum tubing. I screw the treaded end at the top of the radiator after disconnecting the tranny cooler in line. With the clear PVC tubing I can flush the whole system in less than 20 minutes with a minimum of ATF waste. Best $8 bucks ever spent!
