can anyone tell how to fix my 4L60E from shifting hard from 1st to 2nd?

my 97 C2500 5.7LVortec with 4L60E did that one day about a dozen times after a highway drive on a hot day... when everything cooled down there was no problem..... except that a week later I lost the transmission on the highway while pulling my travel trailer.....

.. the 1-2 shift issue is likely caused by a sticky shift sensor
.. on the other had it could be an early sign of impending major trouble

Several things would cause harsh shifting in the 4L60E.

I would, scan the computer first to see if there are any transmission issues.
Another common problem is a worn out accumulator piston. What happens here is the aluminum accumulator piston wears in the pin bore causing leakage. The purpose of the accumulator is to cushion the shift. If the accumulator is leaking the cushion effect is reduced causing the harsh shift.

In your case, a quick scan probably would have shown a P-1870 trouble code. If it did, the valve body would have had to be removed and the converter clutch regulator and isolator valves sleeved. This was probably one of the causes of your transmissions demise.

well, I now have a total rebuild of the 4L60E transmission and torque convertor... it seems to be working OK, and I am getting used to the different shift response compared to the old sluggish operation.
