I am not quite sure where to post this so this seemed like as good a place as any.
Anyway, i am working with another CT member on possibly purchasing an entire roof section. The problem is, he is all the way on the east coast and i am on the west coast. He got a quote of around $350 already, but that might make the total purchase price cost prohibitive. So i am just wanting to get a couple other quotes to see if there is anything cheaper out there.
I have never shipped anything that large but just wanted to see if any members had suggestions.
Thanks in advance for any help i can get !!

Did you try the bus (Greyhound)? A lot of times they are a lot cheaper!

i have used Greyhound for larger packages, but this roof section is too big. Thanks for the suggestion though.

try uship.com
It's a site where you can put in requests for quote for items you need shipped. You can also bid on your price to deliver stuff too.
it's based on the premise that "if your gonna be driving between 2 points, you might as well see if you can offset your costs by delivering something for soneone needing to ship it".
Alot of people use this to move fragile items, animals, and stuff that is bulky. Maybe someone planning a trip from the east coast to the west coast would want to make a few bucks on the trip...

For big stuff I always try to use Forward Air ( http://www.forwardair.com ) I ran into the same problem about a month ago, I wanted to buy and ship a full NOS 1/4 panel for a 59. The panel with crating measured 100" x14"x36" and weighed approx 100 pounds. It cost me $132.00 after crating to get it from Forest Pk.Ga. which is a suburb of Atlanta to El Paso Tx. Actual shipping was $106.00 without carting. Greyhound would ship for 20 dollars more but would not insure it for over $300.00 . Forward Air insures for a 1.00 for every 100.00. No Limit Plus it's a 4 day max shipping. The item has to be on a pallet or 2x4s so a forklift can pick it up. The only drawback is Forward Air might not be close to you. Hope this helps.

I've used R&L carriers with good sucess. I shipped a tranny&converter from AZ to Atlanta, not light either and i paid about $80 to my door. I also shipped a full cutoff quarter panel with them too, from AZ to GA about the same price. That was in '07.

You might look into someone offering transport of cars from one coast to another.

Ask the seller to split the shipping cost.
IMO, Not too many people looking for a roof section so he's probably not going to sell that part anytime soon. Remind the seller that ..."a bird in hand.."

Have him build a crate for it and ship it by train. It may take some time but probably dirt cheap.

The crate is a good idea whether you get it by rail or through truckers. No use getting a dented and discolored piece.
