LESSONS LEARNED
upper INNER shaft.
If you are having problems betting the new shaft to "bite" and go into the bushings, try this before you take a hammer to it.
Follow DZ's advise on using the lower outer bolt as a tool to install......but also use another'ANOTHER' LOWER OUTER NUT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UPPER INNER SHAFT TO TIGHTEN UP THE SHAFT.
Then use two 1 1/8 wrenches on either end of the shaft to both push and pull at the same time.
Works like a champ. Got this tip from one of our
members down under..........but it resolved my particular situation

Are you referring to the steel bushings for the upper-inner cross shaft??? If so, they are spot welded in place and new ones are available from Paragon Reproductions.

The bell crank that you mentioned, is that the center steering arm/bracket??? If so, you also need the Vette left and right steering arms because they have a different angle than the ones on pass cars.

I am a noob here and I have now been welcomed, figured out I had to be logged in to reply, and now know what a sticky can do for someone!
This is exactly where I am with a 54' Bel Air and now that I have seen your rebuild I am even more excited. That looks awesome!

Now, while you are at this point in the restoration of your 49, one thing I will point out. You can do a really nice DIRECT BOLT-ON upgrade to your brakes by locating a 51-54 donor car and replacing your Huck brakes with the 51-54 Bendix style brakes. You will need the backing plates, drums and all brake hardware from a 51-54 car. It will all be a direct swap and a nice brake upgrade.

It is not asking you to update your info. Looks like Tom had the photos uploaded to photobucket.
Photobucket it now asking for money to host pictures. Those were the pictures he took. The service manual should have most of the pictures you need.
There is a topic, I think in ChitChat that talks about Photobucket.

Hello DZAUTO, I have a question on the camber adjustments, there are 2 1 on the drivers side and 1 on the passenger side, since I took mine apart, I don't remember which side the allen screws go the drivers side goes to the back, twards the steering wheel, and the passengers side the allen goes the front twards the head light, is the right? if so I don't remeber the adjustment on the actual allen screws if the go twards the outside or?. I did this once and they came out prfect, but it has been a while. Here is my cell number, if you can call me I would sure apreciate it, call me any time, I,am retiered it is 3:00pm wed. I'am finished putting togaether the front suspension. I have a silly question, the front Brake pads, doe's the short pad go to the front or at the back, it has been a while I had to stop my project, and I restarted again, forgetting where I left off. I'am moving to Las Vegas soon.

Short faces forward. And they are shoes or linings, not pads. Pads are on disc brakes.

Hello Ray, the manual reads, on page 5-13 6. Attach brake shoe to brake flange plates with the hold down pins and springs using tool J-4712; at the same time engage shoes with wheel cylunder connecting links. The primary shoes (short lining) goes forward. You wre so right, I just had to read a ;ittle closer, thank you, I have another problem the Arm that controls the steering is hitting the parking brake base. I never had these problems before, poopoo happens. I,am gona have to look this over, I dont think it's because I put springs that were cut 1" to lower it a little. Any way I'll call you tomorrow. Hello DZAUTO, Do you or do you have the link that shows how to rebuildthe steering colum? my steering colum hits the bottom of the emergency brake bracket. and does'nt alow the steering to turn all the way to the left. It hit the ememgency brake bracket, and stops. I believe you ahve a link that shows how to rebuild them. Thank you Frank.
