I just bought a 400 sbc and it has the 333882 factory heads. I am not racing my car, but want a strong running impala when I am finish.

Today, I saw an ad for 5.7 vortec heads casting number 12558062. I want to know if these are good heads. They are off of a 1997 suburban with 135k miles on it.

Thanks!

This is what the guy wrote back when I asked him about the history of the heads...

Ya, My wife was driving down the road and threw a rod through the bottom of the oil pan. I pulled the engine apart and was going to rebuild it but the lower end of the block was damaged so just replaced whole engine. There appears to be no damage to the heads I just don’t need them and they are taking up space in my garage. Charlie.

They are Vortec 164 cc heads. If they are in good shape and you just want a good running engine then i would say how much money does he want for them and if they are a good price get them. Just remember they have miles on them and could need some rework. From what i have heard some year models of the Vortec heads haved problems with the seats cracking.
Runs like a Scalded Dog!!

I have a set, they work great. On a 400 SB though, you will be out of steam by 5000 RPM or so, not much more. It would be a torque monster for sure.
6.0 LQ4, 242/248 @.050, .610/.615 lift, 110 LSA, Holley 750 Carb, Victor Jr intake, Stainless works headers, T56 6 speed trans, Moser 12 bolt 4.30 gears, manual steering and no AC.

Best to date, 7.1@97 MPH, 1.5 60 foot, stock junkyard 6.0 carb/cam

They limited to around .480 lift stock.
You'll need a Vortec intake manifold. Different bolt pattern than standard Chevy.
Will need steam holes drilled in them for the 400.
138k.... I'd be freshening them up.

He wants $100 and that includes everything ... valves, springs, valve covers, etc. I am new to this and don't know what lift cam I am going with, but nothing to far from stock. Probably bore the engine to clean it up, so most likely a very mild 406.

Are most street cams lift (for a sb 400) more than this head will handle?

You're going to need a big dished piston to run 64cc heads on a 400. Just a guess but I would imagine 18cc's or bigger probably 21cc's at least for maximum bottom end torque.
