The wife's 89 GMC Safari is getting tired, I need some help as which way to go...?
Do they make a new GM Crate motor for this thing? Is there another way to go? Should I just rebuild it? Lotsa ?'s, just needing some info and advice.
Thanks.

I just saw the c.i. 262 on the website, I'm not a liter person, I grew up in the c.i. age... But,I learn something new, every single day... But I'd still like to know if there's a bigger/more powerful one available? How hard would it be to stuff this, or another (hotter) one this size in there?

That would be a job!!! And working on it would be even more of a pain but it certainly can be done. I think I would go over to the S-10 Forum and ask about the best 4.3 to replace it with, maybe a Vortec but I am unfamiliar with the 4.3.

I just got my catalog from Beck Racing Engines..they have a turn key motor for the 89-92 GM trucks...puts of 307HP and 360 lb ft Torque....comes with Edelbrock MPFI, dist, calibrated chip etc...basically just pull your old motor and drop in the new one...Kinda expensive though...around 6,000 for the turn key job...but that EVERYTHING brand new...You can get more info on it from Becks website...I thought about going this route, but will go with GMPP 330HP Deluxe...found wiring kit to bypass chip to motor, but still use chip for tranny etc...and still have a couple grand left over....Hmmmmm, what could I spend that on????

CDUSA and anyone else, go this from Scoggin ****ey...
"Buzzy,
The engine you need for your 1989 GMC Safari is part number 12361243. SDPC sells this engine for $1970.57. This is the direct replacement engine for you car as specified by the GM catalogs. The engine is covered by the GM Goodwrench Warranty for 36 months or 50,000 miles for parts and labor."
Have any of you bought from them and is this a good price?
Thanks for your help!

Yes, I have used them but the website says 1919$ for that part number----50$ but still!!!!!!!!

The V-6 has always been higher than a 350---but what isn't? I would ask them about if there are any qualifications that need to be met for them to honor the warranty---I have not had a problem with them but I have heard that they may require a certified shop to install it----new hoses and belts and stuff. But I do alot of business with them.

If you do it, just make sure you prime the oil system till you can't stand it anymore while turning over the motor---that is my only hangup---this and any other motor must be primed!

I like the idea of buying a brand new engine (all new top to bottom). But I've heard a couple of things I don't like about the GM replacement engines. The 3 year warrranty is great but it's only good if a GM dealer installs it and these replacement engines are made and built in Mexico. I've seen both of these mentioned on our boards and don't know this for fact. Anything to it?

Being an 89 you can swap to a 350 or a 305 fairly easily. 350's get about 2 mpg worse than a 305 and stock you don't gain much. You can maintain the TBI system by buying a computer from a fullsize van with the engine size that would go in the astro. You would also need the tbi unit (or injectors, exhaust manifolds, knock sensor, maybe some more. Check out these web pages if intrested in a V8.
If I were doing it I would try to go to some local salvage auctions and look for a low mileage donor vehicle you can pick up cheap. Camaro RS with 305TBI, GM Van 305 or 350, or a GM 2wd truck with 305 or 350. You would also want the transmission because V6 transmissions are weaker than ones behind V8's. If you go the donor way you would have everything you would need. You would gain alot of torque with either engine and your gas mileage with a 305 will be about the same. My carbed big van with a 305 gets 17 on the road.

Thanks guys! I'm always learning something in here. I'll check out all the options you've mentioned and if anyone has any more I'll still be listening. I don't know much about the warrenty from GM, so if anyone does I sure would appreciate ya letting me know. I've got a TH350 tranny that I could swap in the van if it would woek?

If your 700r4 is working properly why would you want to swap to a turbo 350. You will lose alot of gas mileage due to no lockup torque converter or overdrive. The V6 transmission will work but if you abuse it or get on it very often, it won't last to long behind a V8. If you go V6 it should be fine. Mine behind a 305 has 150,000 hard miles and never been rebuilt (knock on wood).
