What 6 cylinder engine was available in the 1965 C20 trucks?

And how much HP/TQ can you get with a well built 6 cylinder from the era?

Thanks.....

Either the 230 or the 292 in 1965. 292 has a sawtooth style valve cover.

The 292 is 165 HP, the 230 is 140 HP.

Thanks Vaughn. Any idea with a aftermarket cam and head work what kind of HP numbers I could get out of one of these motors? I have a forged 502 BB waiting patiently do drop into my 65 chevy truck. But I have heard some really cool inline 6's and thought about maybe building the motor if I could pump it up a little....

Check the side covers on your six, if they 6 inches high you have a 292, 4 inches 230/250. The stock hp on the 292 was about 175. The bottom end torque is better than a 350. I like the bottom end torque of my 292 and being able to off the line at just above idle. To find out what you can do with a 2230/250/292 for performance check out inliners.org

You can get wild with the 6 if you want, just depends on how much money you want to spend.

One of the inline 6's best quality is its low end torque. There are some cam swaps you can do, head porting or even supercharging/turbochargi ng that will improve on that.

The six cylinder motors respond to traditional hop up measures - airflow, cooling and whatnot.

I addition to inliners.org, there is clifford performance that deals strictly with inline motors, and there are some tech info on stovebolt.com (you have to look around a little to find them).

I've heard of 15-18 mpg with the 250. I've gotten 16 mpg with my 292, I have an overdrive and 4.11 gears. your rear axle ratio is the limiter with out going to OD.

yes, but....if he has a stock 65 C20 rear end, he's got 4.56 gears.

Probably can only get 20mpg downhill

My '65 C20 came stock with a 175p 327. It averages around 16mpg. 4speed with a compound 1st. Not sure about the rear end.
