Is anyone out there using the Compcams Magnum 292 .501 cam in a sbc 355? I am curious about what kind of vac readings you are getting at idle and how your idle quality actually is.

I ran the Magnum 292 in a 406 back in the 80's. It worked very well for me. I think I was pulling around 8 inches of vacuum at idle which, if I remember correctly, was around 1000 rpm.
Great cam for back then but there are many more to select from now. If you haven't purchased a cam yet you might look into an extreme energy cam from Comp.
Later on I switched to the Comp Cams XE 284H-16 which is a flat tappet hydraulic.

I presently run a hydraulic roller CSXR288HR.

I've run 1.6 roller rockers on all the cams.

I know a guy who ran one. It's a mid-high RPM cam with radical idle and low vacuum.

He switched to the 280 Magnum, which was a little better, but still too much for a 355 with street/highway gearing, IMO.

Of course, cam selection depends on compression ratio, gearing, car weight, etc.

Although they aren't state of the art, the slower ramps of the Comp High Energy and Magnum cams are very easy on the valve train. And you don't necessarily need a dual pattern cam unless your exhaust port flows less than 75% of your intake port. At least this is what a Brodix guy told me.

I just put together a new 355 and used this cam. I was pulling my hair out thinking I had a vac leak I couldnt find. I need to kick the idle up a little more to around 1000RPMs but at around 850 ish I am getting around 10 inches of vac which is better than some I am finding out. I am going for a kind of old school sleeper theme anyway in my 78 c10. The truck runs good I was just a little concerened about the idle I thought I would or should have got around 12-14 inches of vac. Its not like I depend on this truck for anything other than fun so I really dont care how it idles.

why NOT? I noticed the NOT in caps. Its really quite fun and street friendly despite what some people claim.
