I replaced the connector on my lower intake(5.7L vortec on a 97 z71), that the heater core hose connects to(known for breaking inside manifold, which it did!!) Well it's starting to leak again. The aftermarket piece i put in has a black rubber sleeve in it, with no orings that the heater line connects into with a white quick connect. Should I get the GM factory part from the dealer, or should an aftermarket store(say napa?) have the black rubber sleeve to replace mine with? It's very cold up here in northern MN now(-25 without windchill this morning), and it started leaking last week. I'm afraid to take the piece out of the manifold and replace it, because I don't want to screw the threads up putting the new one in and risk stripping the manifold out. God knows I don't want to put a manifold on this thing. The truck sits outside of our apt, so the engine is pretty rusty and I know any disassembly will lead to more of a headache then it's worth(broken bolts!). I'm a ford dealership mechanic, so i know how to wrench, but I rarely work on chev's(unless it's my own). Any hints to fixing this common 5.7L problem??

Personally, I don't think the aftermarket clips hold as tight as the GM versions----I measured both and the GM are slightly thicker/longer than the china jobs.
There again, I finally broke down and recently changed my heater hoses (over 12 yrs and 465K miles) and for all intent and purposes, they were still perfect to the eye. The new hose fitting wouldn't seal in the old, but replaced steel fitting, so I put another new GM fitting in the manifold and that stopped it.
If you've already changed it out, I'm sure you put some anti-seize on it and it won't be bad to get out? Mine spun right out after many years and miles.
I appreciate the fact if you want it to remain original, so do I, but several here have replaced the fitting with a barbed nipple, cut the hose and clamped it. This isn't a direction for me unless it's an emergency, but it's an option.
I ran that setup on cars for decades, the clamp was always cutting the hose or the hose getting fatigued, retighten the clamp or cut a bit more off the hose always trying to stop a seep.

I had the same trouble with my 1999 GMC Yukon with the 5.7L. I started with the cheap Pepboy crap and it started leaking again after 4 or 5 months. I went to my local dealer and picked up a new manifold fitting and hose. It was pretty easy to replace this time around because it was off 5 months ago. It has now been 2 years and no problems. I say go to your local dealer for these parts.

I had my parts guy get me the piece from the local chev dealer($14). I looked inside it, and it has a built in o-ring that my aftermarket one doesn't have? I also got the quick connector with it to replace on the heater hose. I'm gonna try and put it in tommorow after work if I can.

We had this problem on a 98 vortec 350. We just drilled out the hole and tapped it and used a brass fitting from home depot. Never leaked again.

I might have to do that because I can NOT get all of the old one out. Im worried about messing up the threads on the manifold. I have a cupler removing tool but its not grabing on the small about left but there is still to much for the new fitting to screw in. What should I do?

I'm not sure on that year, is this fitting at the rear of the manifold?
You just think you can't get it out, just takes patience. One of the tricks is to take a hacksaw blade and grind it to fit, sit there and saw the fitting into sections. Then use a pic, like a curved dental pic to pluck each thread out.
But you can get it pretty close to clean, and if it's sized like ours, take a 1/2" pipe tap and work it in and out, little bit at a time, it will come clean. Good pipe dope fixes lots of screwups
Now, I'm referring to our Vortec fitting that were/are pewter/pot metal. If yours is steel, it may be a different animal to get out. And, being at the back (if so) does complicate things.

yup way at the back. at this point it would probably be easier to take the whole manifold off and do it.
The saw blade deal would maybe work but I got it down so far that I would probably start getting into the wrong threads. The only thing left to try is poking at each row until its all out. That will take all day so Ill try it tomorrow.
great site by the way. so much info i might end up rebuilding the whole truck if i keep reading.

I put the new fitting in, and it's not leakin anymore. I had my first one break when I replaced it last winter. Used the Lisle easy-out tool and that just rounded out the inside of the fitting. Ended up going to sears and buyin a pack of small hacksaw blades and sawing it into sections, then used the easy out. Came right out.

Well finally got it. DO NOT BUY THE AFTERMARKET PART. I bought one because it was Sunday and Chevy parts was closed. After I put it on the thing still had a bad leak out of the top where the hose and the plastic connector go together. Went to Chevy to ask questions and bought the "same" part there and you can tell right away that there is less pay and it fits much more snug. Now I have other issuse I think with the distributor....I think so fluids might have splash onto it cause it seemed to be shooting right over that way. Well at least I got this pain fixed...thanks for all the good tips.
