After using my Bead Blaster w/o a vacuum, I realized it was going to be a constant issue with glass bead squeezing out of the smallest cracks and making a mess around the cabinet and visibility while blasting, always a bit tough.

I read about this somewhere on the internet, but basically built a water pipe for my cabinet. Those of you with "adventureous" teenage years might remember how those worked...

Took a pool chemical bucket (need one with a top),
    cut two holes
insert one piece of PVC extending close to the bottom
insert another fitting that goes into the bucket but does not touch the water
    fill bucket halfway with water
    put your top on
attach the pipe extending into the water to your bead blasting cabinet.
attach the pipe that is NOT in the water to your vacuum. ($2 at a garage sale)

You know have a Blasting Cabinet vacuum setup you can use with any vacuum which keeps the beads in the cabinet and you can actually see what you're doing while blasting.

I guess I didn't have an adventurous life when I was a kid. I don't understand how this works.

From the best I can understand.... the bucket traps the sand while you're vacumming, so that the sand isn't ruining the vaccum - right?

From what I've been told, back in the 70's this would be known as a bong. Of course I would have no first hand knowledge of such an item. This is a very cool idea, and looks to be a tremendous solution to a vexing problem. I love it when a problem can be solved on the cheap!

I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up.

Matt,

Think of the water as simply a filter for the vacuum. The dust/beads floating around in the cabinet get sucked into the water, vs directly into the vacuum.

The other purpose is to also vent the air pressure you're putting inside the cabinet while using it.

There's system like this that I brought from home depot (I think) when doing the sheet rock in my garage. It has a vented sanding head for that mesh type grit cloth. Hose sucks dirty air from hand pad to pail, bubbles thur the water an clean air is pull out to the vacuum unit.
After about three hours of sheet rock sanding I'd have a couple of inches of stuff in the pail an very little on the floor. It worked great.

Hey Mule! You been lurking for a while?
Haven't seen you post lately.
Or have you been on the 49-54 forum?

I like the big bong theory, I may have to do me one.
