Hey y'all---

I'm thinking about getting a 97 K2500 Sub with 454 Vortec and 3.73 gears. What kind of MPG do you get with similar trucks, not loaded or towing?

My current Sub is a 94 C1500 with a 350. I'd prefer to be looking for a 350 Vortec in a K2500, but this 454 truck is spotless and the price may be right.

Also, my 94 350 TBI, all stock, only gets 12 MPG. My previous Sub, an 85 C1500, 350 carbed, got 15 with mild mods. I wish my 94 would get that, but if this 454 doesn't get any worse, I may just buy it....

thanks!

Kevin, what is your 12 MPG figure from? My '94 C1500 Suburban, 5.7 4L60E 3.42 gears got about 16~17 on the highway. If you're talking highway MPG then you've got a tune problem that needs to be addressed.

On the '97 MPG, dunno. The only Vortec 7.4's I've owned were C3500's and not a good comparison because they've got a lot of extra weight in the form of wrecker units, and had taller gears. My '96 C3500 extended cab dually, 7.4 4L80E 4.10's with an extra thousand pounds or so of weight in the back, got about 9 MPG. I shudder to think what my current '98 crew dually with the same setup, except 19.5 tires, gets...

12mpg around town/mixed freeway. Even with more freeway, it doesn't get much better.

I know there ought to be something wrong, but it runs great and I don't see any signs of trouble.

I'll see if I can get it on an analyzer or something.

I do have some speedo/odo error due to the 265/16 tires. Based on comparing the odo to mileposts, I add 10% to the odo reading when calculating MPG. AFAI-Knew, the only speedo correction for the 94 is a Superchips (?) box for ~$200 that's not very durable. But you've straightened me out on that in another post!

Yep! That's a great thing about the pre-Vortec trucks; it's a snap to correct the speedo. Well, at least the 92-94 and I guess 95 uses the DRAC as well but I haven't dug into one yet.

When I did mine I tried with the manufacturer's spec on the tire diameter and found that getting an actual measurement was much better. I then verified it with my GPS; one truck took a few tries, the other one was spot on. It helped that I took notes for the 3 closest settings so I could change it on the fly without having to come back to the house.

I hope the Vortec does better than my 93 C2500 454 Suburban.

It gets about 10mpg no matter what you do with it.

I can be driving around town, running the interstate, or pulling a fully loaded race car trailer, and it still gets about 10mpg.

I guess that is why torque is good and big cubic inch is bad...

I am not complaining too much because I bought a spotless 15 yr old truck with 32,000 miles on it for cheap, but filling that 42 gallon tank at near $4 a gallon is getting old...

I talked to a guy yesterday who said his 97 454 Vortec K2500 got 11 mpg pulling a car on a trailer from FL to TN.

I dunno. The truck I'm looking at has ~110K, it's practically showroom condition, has leather, CD, F&R air, barn doors, etc. Asking $4900. I'd try to get it closer to $4k. Could maybe sell mine for $2K.

I know of a tired-looking K2500 7.4 with a bad motor. I could swap the K2500 frame under my truck, put my 350 in it.... I might be willing to pay $1000 for the other truck. Of course, that's half what he wants for it....

Did they make K2500s with 350 Vortecs? Every one I see has a 454.

You should be able to get them either way, it's just that the K2500 was the "minimum" truck you had to buy to GET the 454.

It sounds like a sharp truck but $4900 is a little steep considering people are dumping Suburbans like bad habits. Nobody wants to pay for the fuel, especially for a 454. This has been going on since '04 or so when fuel was still below $2.
