My neighbor's '02 Silverado [ 1500, 5.3, 76,000 miles ] had a miss at idle. The shop at the corner runs a scan and says it's an intake manifold leak. He buys a gasket at Advance Auto supply but decides to let the corner auto shop do the job. They say they can't use the gasket from Advance Auto so they use one of " their's ". They complete the job $300.00 later and tell him that it's a " common " problem on the 5.3 and 4.8 Chevy engines. Neighbor says it has solved the periodic miss at idle. My '01 has 55,000 miles on it. Is the intake manifold leak really a " common " problem and something that I should be looking ahead to or is the corner shop just Dodge/Ford guys that are full of B$?

Not "common" in the sense that it happens to everyone, but it isn't all that unusual.
To diagnose, start up the truck and spray a little bit of carb cleaner around the edge of the intake manifold - if the idle speeds up when your spray it on a certain area, that's the carb cleaner getting sucked into the intake - bad gasket.

Way more common on the '99-'02 trucks, my Tahoe had to be replaced in the high 70k range.

it's possible the gasket leak is on the inside of the manifold where carb spray wont make a change in idle. But then you might have an oil consumption problem.
as long as you are spraying around the intake runners, you may want to spray around the throttle body and PCV valve and other vacuum lines.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that while it would prove you definitely have a leak, it wouldn't prove for sure that you don't.
