Need some tech advice and/or someone who knows about early Chevy Station Wagons.

My buddy and I have recovered a mostly complete 62 Bel Air wagon 6 Pass. with the 409 2x4, original 4 spd car, less tranny, with a siren and a large set of radio transmitters in the rear of the car. I would like to hear some thoughts about this car and would like to find someone knowledgeable about these special cars. Car is mostly complete and will need a total restoration. Has what appears to be a factory mounted tach, (7K) on the column.

Currently researching all of the numbers and seems to be a numbers correct car. I will post photo's soon as I am waiting for the paper work to finalize and will do so soon.

The car will need to be completely restored as it has been sitting since the late 60's.

Contact information and thoughts would be appreciated.

If it has the original motor, it is indeed a rare car and worth restoring. Check the motor ID pad on the passenger front side of the motor. It is just below the head on the deck. There should be two sets of numbers. The first will be a letter followed by a series of numbers. Those numbers should match the last part of the car's VIN ID number. The second set will start wit a T and if it was a 425HP block will end with a QB.

Need to get over to storage to double check the numbers. I was pretty sure the engine vin was correct to the body vin. The T series number ends with QB and I think in 62 would have been a 409 HP with 420 Ft Lbs of torque.

Does anyone know about the ACC Code "50" on the Cowl Tag. If memory serves me the car is a St. Louis build and the Acc Code is 50. I cannot determine what this means. I also would like to know if I can find out where the car was sent from the factory. I believe the person I bought the car from was the second owner and would like to know the origin from the factory.

Any thoughts??

There are others on this board more up on ACC codes then I.

Does it have a power rear window? Seems to me I recall 50 was a power S/W window...

In the 60's S/W were used a police supervisor and K-9 cars. Look for evidence of holes for screens that would have been installed behind the driver's seat or rear seat.

Thank you,

I do not see any evidence this car has/had power windows or the rear power window. Do the Acc codes vary by manufacturing location?

I cannot find holes are any thing to indicate a cage or screen was in place for a K9 Unit.

Seems this one is a mystery waiting to solved. Does anyone know the production numbers for these cars. I am curious how many were made and how many may be left.

The production numbers only break it down to series, body style and 6 or V8. There is no way to tell how many of this combination were made but I can take a guess that there were very few and the one you have if it is an original probably is the only survivor and may be the only one made with that combo. I have a 64 Impala wagon with a 340hp and 4spd and I know of two other 64s with 340hp and 4spds. I spoke with a guy from Seattle that said he had a 62 wagon with a 380hp 409 and 4spd. I don't remember if it was a Bel Air or Impala. You have an extremely rare car and it needs to be saved.

If it was a police or fire spec etc., it was a special order, if you post all the info from the trim tag and/or a pic, someone may be able to figure it out.

No it doesn't. Just put an air-ride suspension on it. lower it and get some 22" wheels with rubber band tires. That way, you'll be keeping up with today's trend. Forget it's history!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I'm just in a funk because NOBODY wants to restore one of these cars anymore.!

Is the Impala Body the same as the Bel-Air? I am not sure what body parts, doors etc... would work across the years. The front clip should be 62 only, I do not know if the Impala front clip is the same.

Yes, they are the same in station wagons. The bubble top Bel Aire has a different top. The difference is in the trim pieces and mouldings.

The 50 looks like it was stamped in after the fact so it must be for a special order item. The front sheet metal is the same for all 62s. The front doors fit all 4 door sedans and wagons. Rear doors back is unique to the wagons and is the same for Biscayne Bel Air or Impala. Solid tailgates are hard to find as are gas tanks and the chrome frame for the rear glass. I'm very anxious to see photos. In my opinion this is a car that deserves a complete and correct restoration.

We will restore this car as original due to the fact there were not many made, even less left and this is an engine/vin matching numbers car with most all of the parts.

As for the rear doors will the bottom of the door work on 4drs if a person were to change the window frame?

I suspect the frames for the wagon were the same for the sedan in the event I need to get some frame parts.

The only special order items I can come up with is the radio set and the siren. The car is a plain jane car with the biggest engine possible. No power steering, no power brakes, simple dash, 7k Sun tach, drum brakes, 409 steel wheels, no AC. Had chrome aircleaner, valve covers and oil tube cap.


I will post some pics as soon as I have the paperwork taken care of. Sorry for the delay, I promise complete photos of all as soon as we finish the paperwork.

The car may have 15" wheels; I believe that many fleet cars came equipped that way.

The wheels were 14 inch wide style wheels Noticed this when we put some tires on the rims to roll the car around

You mentioned that it had chrome air cleaner valve covers and oil fill cap. 62s had silver painted valve covers and black air cleaners. The factory chrome didn't come until 63.

Perhaps the chrome was an add on after the fact. I noticed when I was looking at repops I could not find the chrome for the 62, The numbers on the car match for 62 as stamped in the block against the vin. Perhaps the owner wanted to add a few touches under the hood sometime after 63.

I have attached a pic of the engine compartment as we found it. If in fact chrome did not come out until 63, then this will save us a few dollars on the resto. I can get painted covers and a black aircleaner much cheaper.

I dont know about the others here at CT but I have warm fuzzy dreams about finding cars like these.
Spot a round taillight out in a field, or notice the grill of a 58-64 chevy from a dirt road.
Walk out, check the find over. Pop the hood and a dual quad 409! Wow!!
Finding a W block is cool enough in these cars, a 409/409 is way too cool.
And the police wagon coupled with that turquoise green, killer.
Nice find and post stories of the find and more pics if you can.

That is one of the most impressive "field" finds I've seen! I noticed the tach sender box on the drivers side inner fender. Another indicater that the 409 is authentic. I'm curious as to what is mounted just forward and a little higher on the inner fender. Maybe a clue to it's original use.

One thing I would have expected to see was the big washing machine Delcotron alternator in lieu of the generator if this was an original police or fire dept vehicle. Of course this could have been replaced years ago.

It would be great to see more pictures of the whole car in the state you found her. Eye candy for us car crazy nuts
