Are there any way to use this tranny without the ECM ?

Or any solutions with aftermarket ECM which is afordable ?

There are several places that sell a standalone box that does this. I think, maybe, that MSD and also Edelbrock are two brands. They cost around $700. if you are interested in it I will hunt it up for you. I remember seeing it on one of the Transmisson sites, I think. JB

Do you know if there are any DIY projects (like megasquirt for fuel/ignition-management) ? or if there are any rebuildkits so i wont need any kind of ecm?

I used the B&M standalone box with excellent results. It uses a speedo cable adapter to generate a rpm signal, then you have a slide switch in a little dash-mountable box you can set the lockup to work at a certain speed. Your brakelight switch is also wired in to unlock the converter upon braking.

Worked great, and like most stuff, I got it from Summit.

GM makes a stand alone ecm for 4l60e but its around $900 at summitt , i have HGM's Compushift ecm its a little dearer with the optional display programmer but then you don't need a laptop to make changes

I've read you can convert them to a full manual valve body. Otherwise, you need a computer.

I guess I don't see the point of running a 4L60E without a matching computer controlled engine. So that's what I'd do - get an engine with a PCM that can control it, and get the value added - or trade the 4L60E for a 700-R4.

The value of a good used 4L60E should enable you to get a rebuilt 700-R4 or at least a good used one.

Now, it may be a different story on using a 4L80E with a stand alone controller. But it wouldn't be for me - I'd get the engine/trans combo.

Just my opinion, I'm sure others differ. I just can't see ponying up $800-900 for a controller when I can probably have a 700-R4 for the same cash + whatever I could get for the 4L60E.

I absolutly see your point.

My plan is to put the 4l60e behind my 355 which I will provide with TPI controlled by Megasquirt and I like to know from you guys "over there" what my optins are redgarding this transmission. There is no doubt that you have way more experience than guys here in Norway.

A 4l60e is a 700r4 - the only difference being that one shifts electrically and the other shifts hydraulically.

The 4l60e shifts with electronic shift solenoids. GM figured out it was easier to control the transmission electronically than via the hydraulic circuits. Plus you can change how the trans shifts while driving, which can be a real benefit for some engines.

So, if you don't want mess with a computer controlled version, get the hydraulically controlled one - the 700r4.

The 700r4 came behind the TPI in stock GM vehicles - the TPI controlled the lockup of the transmission. Most any aftermarket TPI controller will be able to handle the lockup of the 700r4 torque converter.
