Have a brand new 350 Crate motor that I bought the best of everything for. Engine blew an ignition module about 2 months ago. Engine started hesitating and going dead while driving. Had been able to recrank but it died again today and will not crank. Can smell the ignition module being burnt again. This is a Proform late model billet distributor and hi-volage coil.
Any idea what could be causing this?
My truck is being towed as I write and I'm thinking of replacing the dist and coil tomorrow with a Autozone HEI.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No ideas except are you applying a small amount of heat sink compound before installing the module? They really do need it.

Are you using a quality ignition module? What brand?

I have no idea what brand my mechanic put it when it blew last time. The original was the Proform that came with the distributor. Either way the Proform and the replacement both went out.
Just don't want to keep replacing modules. Plus, I can't depend on it like this.

I agree on the Dielectric Silicone compound under it, only thing I can add is I had one on a stationary engine doing it one time-----and they need to run-----now! As a last straw I put a ground wire from the distributor body to the same lug that the ground cable from the battery was on, that did the trick on that motor.

You also need quality components, a good cap/rotor/wires/plugs.

Well, after the truck was towed in (again) the thing actually cranked. When it quit I spent about 15-20 mins. trying to get it cranked before calling for a tow. Since I smelled something when it quit and I've heard several mechanics say they had problems with Accel and Proforms blowing the modules, I went ahead a put a stock GM Hei in the truck. Seemed to run great for several hours and then out of the blue, stopped at a red light and it just goes dead. Has done this on and off since I put it in. Is it related to the ignition module problem? I am totally baffeled (disgusted really!) with this NEW motor. Any idea what would make one just run fine and then all of a sudden - just die. Cranks back up but that's what happened with the burn ignition module - that time no fire at all - towed. Everythings fine and then nothing - would not crank.
I just don't where to look next. IAC maybe? Ground?
