I've got plenty of oil left, and i'd hate to have to buy a new kit.
I've heard that 409 would be a good substitute for the K&N cleaner, or it's basically the same stuff that K&N puts in their bottles?
I have some Greased Lightning, plenty of it, would that work?
Thanks.

Anything that will cut oil and grease should work.

I think K&N plans for us using more of the cleaner than the oil...I use SIMPLE GREEN and it works fine, but I clean my filters out at 5,000-7,500 miles before they really get dirty.

In the spray can version , it needs to be or it would just run off. The bottled version isn't that sticky.

No, it's not a diesel, it just sounds like one. |

I might just try some Greased Lightning, I really like the stuff, it works great for everything i've used it to clean.
I would just try some Dove and warm water in the sink, but my mom would have one hellova fit.

You should have been around in 1964 when my buddy got the brillant idea of "pre heating" 6 quarts of Pennzoil for a new motor startup in his mother's oven on a cookie sheet, too bad he didn't think about the cans bursting in the hot oven. Fire trucks were called, lower level needed new carpets and paint, upper level ONLY needed carpets and walls cleaned.

I don't have one of those filters. Heck, my car wont even run but I would just like to add this...
I raced Moto-X for a number of years in very dusty conditions. I used to wash my air filter in gasoline (hey, it was the 70's) but a good solvent like NAPTHA would be great to clean all the oil out. You would be surprised how much more dirt will come out if you follow the solvent wash with a warm water detergent wash like liquid dish washing soap.
The theory is that dirt is soluable in water only. The petroleum solvent will carry away the dirt trapped in the filter oil but not the dirt trapped in the filter. Clean the filter in solvent as clean as you can get it. Dry it completely. Wash it in a 5 gal warm water & detergent bucket and see how much more dirt is in the bottom when you pour it out.

I've heard that ATF works fine. I've had K&N filters on my bike for about 15 years, I've used ATF whenever I clean them. The ATF comes out pretty easily with dishwashing soap and water. I've avoided harsh cleaners because I don't want to break down the gauze in the filters. The filters are still going strong.

Isn't that what ATF is anyway? 10 or 15W oil with some red dye in it, detergent packages, and whatever agents added to keep it from foaming?

I soak my K&N filter in detergent and hot water, let it dry overnight, then put some Marvel Mystery oil in a spray bottle and lightly spray some in the filter.

K&N, founded by Ken & Norm. I've known those people for 40 years.
K&N filter cleaner IS Formula 409. A good alternate is a product you can get at Family Dollar and other stores, "L.A.'s Totally Awesome" cleaner. Wash off with hot water and soap.
The "oil" is Dexron type ATF.

Very interesting. I keep a stash of oil and cleaner handy. Good to know about alternatives.

Ken Johnson, Norm McDonald, Riverside Kawasaki, eons ago.
Smell the K&N cleaner, and then, the Formula 409, they used to smell identical.
