My 1940 Chevy coupe leaks water through the hood cowl vent (vent lid was closed)when I wash the car. As a result, water drips below under the dash into my stereo. Is this a common occurrence and what can I do to stop the leak. Thanks in advance.

How old is your cowl vent seal? and is your hose hooked up to drain the water away. This hose is hook to your vent.

The seal or gasket doesnt look to bad however there is no hose attached to the vent. Does this hose run from the underside of the vent and then down under the dash or through the firewall ? Thanks

It leads from the gutter under the dash that is around the vent opening, goes thru the firewall and drips the water onto the rear of the engine. Its a special moulded hose .Its available from Chevs of the 40's--part #4101941 -$14.75 .

Update. The hood cowl vent had a drain hose attached to the underdash side of the vent (front side towards the engine)during my leak. I did notice however, what looks like a another drain under the dash that is located between the hood cowl vent and the windshield. It looks like it is below a 9/16" nut which is located on top of the cowl area. The nut is slotted with a small slit in the bolt. What is the purpose of this drain and/or nut and could this be the source of my underdash leak since there is no hose attached to this drain ? Again, thanks in advance.

Why don't you lay under the dash with a flashlight - and have someone use a hose to spray a little water at the open cowl vent while you observe? You should be able to determine the source of the leakage in short order.
