What do you look for? Is there something in the specs you can compare or should look for. If Crazy Eddie has a 200 watt unit for $19.95 and Best Buy sales a 150 watt for $25.00 how do you really know which one is the best?

One of the things to consider is look at what brands have been around for a long time. High end spending notwithstanding, if you're looking for decent sound, compare different head units on the same set of speakers. Make sure the speakers are at ear level to minimize room reflection issues. The brands that come to mind are Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, and Sanyo. Now power ratings are the issue and hype that often get misrepresented. You need to look at the Continuous power output rating and the speaker resistance at that power, for example 50W/ch 8 ohms. That means they connected some 8 ohm speakers and then cranked up the volume, measuring the power dissipated across them.

Match the speaker impedance to the amplifier rating, and make sure the speakers are rated to handle at least twice the amplifier power.
