It engages most the time but not always. It is not the brake light switch since it has been changed. You hear a click seemingly from under the dash toward the gas pedal or above it and the cruise shuts off. Any ideas? Is there a relay or something that controls it?

Alright is it shutting off when you accelerate manually?

Nope, it just shuts off with a click sound. It will not engage again after it does that. It works for my wife better than it does me but it does the click and goes off on us both that way. When it works right the accelerate on the lever works fine too.

same happened to my '98 C1500. replace the cruise control unit & problem fixed. it is the box mounted to the firewall in front of the driver.
cost about $120 on ebay for oem GM.

It is the box with the throttle cable going into it. (there are two cables) one goes to accelerator pedal from throttle body & one goes to the box in question.
