I finally got the A/C system reassembled (correctly this time) and charged.
But I could never get the high side over about 150.
Low side came up to about 35-40.
Compressor keeps cycling on and off.
My proceedure:
I pulled vacuum for about 35 minutes with my new Robinaire 3 CFM pump.
Gages hooked up and both sides open.
I closed off the high side, then the low side.
Turned off the pump and disconnected it.
I then attached a new can of 134 and bled the line at the gage, then opened the high side (engine off) and turned the can over (per instructions from another CT member) and let about 3/4 of the can go in.
Turned high side off and started engine.
Engine running, A/C on MAX and blowing full.
I open the can tap and low side valve and the rest of the can (right side up now and sitting in warm water) goes in.
The compressor starts cycling.
Another can goes in. Pressures climbing a bit.
Third can (12 oz each) goes in.
High side (when compressor running) reading about 140.
Low about 40.
I had one more can and put it in.
High side maxes out about 145 and low about 35-40.

The compressor runs for about 12 seconds and off for about 5-6. Seems to be blowing cold, but it was only about 72 degrees outside.
I'm using an older set of R12 gages with adapters for 134 fittings. If that matters.

Do I need more 134?

What's the saying? "You're watching too darned many old cowboy movies."

Low side correlates very closely with evaporator temperature. Soooo, as close to freezing without actually touching 32 is what ya shoot for. 35-42 is darned near perfect.

High side varies with compressor/condenser load. If the system is struggling to squeeze that vapor back to a liquid state, the pressure goes up.

Again, 150 lbs is about as "perfect" as you can get.

The compressor is supposed to cycle. At 70°, it is just loafing along not doing much. Wait until it's 105° out, that dude will probably be running constantly.

Let me say this again: While the system is running, if it is uncomfortable to continually hold your hand on that receiver, you're full.

OK, great. Now if it holds...
I drove it today and turned on the A/C as I was coming home. Still blows cold, so it didn't leak out overnight.
Reciever, dryer, accumulator= (essentially) the same thing right?
So many names for the same part gets me confused sometimes.
The jug (let's add yet another word to the list... ) itself has a cover over it, but the line to the compressor I could grab hold of.
While I wasn't sticking to it or freezing my hand, it was pretty cold.
As you said, the cooler weather is not making it work as hard. As temps warm up that piece may get (feel?) colder.
Thanks for your help...and patience.

Yeah,

It's just a glorified can. It's real purpose is to act like a muffler so the surging freon noise doesn't get into the cab.

So they call it an accumulator to make it sound important.
And charge more.
