Hi, I need help chooseing a torque converter. It's for a 70 Camaro with 350, bored 30 over with a 383 stoker kit. The cam is a Comp #12-422-8. The trans is a B&M 700 r4. The rear end is currently has 308's, but that might change. I'm not looking for anything for the strip, just a converter for the street that would go with the cam setup. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks...Dale.

Put a good quality 2500 plus lockup converter in there at least.

Especially when you are dealing with an od transmission that can utilize a lockup converter.....no good reason not to put a lil converter in there.

you have the advantage of being able to lock up the converter at cruise and not generate any more heat than a stone stock converter would make anyhow.

Most definitely this engine could work with a stock converter......but the smile on your face generated by a little more stall speed is well worth it

FYI I drive a 4000 stall speed(non lockup) on the street behind my big block chevy. No heat issues to speak of, and its a quality converter that actually drives really mild under modest throttle. Stays nice and tight. Youd never know how large of a converter it is unless I hammer on it.

If your budget can stretch to in the 500 dollar neighborhood you can have a larger stall converter that drives very well at light throttle, and of course locks up to further preserve trans temp at steady cruise.

Best of both worlds.

Couple good brands= TSI, ATI, Edge, and Coan to name a few. Disclaimer: I am not positive if every single one of them currently offers 700r4 converters right now. Been a long long time since I needed a higher stall converter for one of those particular trans. Im a TH350 or TH400 guy most of the time. Edge is the only one I know will have what you need right now. Either the mild street edge, or the street edge could fit the bill. Call em up and see what they think.

The mild street edge is priced nice and stalls round 2600rpm with the typical street small block.

And FYI put a 3.55 gear in there with the overdrive trans. Perfect all around gear for a 3 speed, and even moreso with a 4 speed.

That 383 will raise the stall speed of any torque convertor vs. a 350. I'd say a 2,000 would work fine with that cam, and act more like a 2200-2300 converter.

My pickup once had a 383 (with a slightly smaller cam) 3.08 axle, and a Hughes 2000 convertor. The torque multiplication off idle and at low speeds was awesome. It would shred the tires at will. The downside was it increased revs by around 200 RPM on the highway with the truck's non-lockup 350 trans.

But like Greg says, since yours will be a lock-up T/C, you could use a higher stall speed w/o having to worry about excessive slip on the highway with that 3.08 axle.

Edit: I'm not sure where Hughes stands in the scheme of things, but I always felt they were a notch above the mass market stuff like B&M and TCI. I actually visited their facility in Phoenix several years ago and was very impressed. Seemed like a family-run business of serious racers.

Do yourself a favor and get a converter company to custom make you one for your application. You're going to spend a little money on a converter anyways, atleast for a decent one. The ones you buy from websites are a guess between a certain range. Coan converters can fix you up, but will cost quite a bit. Edge converters for your application will run around $250 for a custom made converter to match the camshaft, vehicle specs, gearing, size of engine, etc. Check them out and give a custom converter company a call. There are more than these 2 companies, but these are the 2 that I like dealing with.

$250 for a custom built converter sounds like a deal.
