Hi guys I'm building a 84 Toyota and I just installed a 4.3 into it. It was tbi and I got a intake from edlebrock but I need a carb. I was told any carb off a 305 or a 350 will work on a 4.3. Is this true. I have a 4 barrel on it right now with a mechanical choke but for some reason you need step on it once and awhile to make it run right it will blow black smoke out the tail pipe. I believe it's a bad carb but is it true u can use a 305 or a 350 carb on it. It will run smooth but when you punch it it's like the choke kicks in so u stomp on it again and it's fine

Sounds like the carb is a bit big for it.

E VACUUM SECONDARY CARBS REACH A CERTAIN VACUUM LEVEL AND OPEN THE SECONDARIES ALL AT ONCE. Sorry for the caps.

Welcome to the site.
A 305 jetted carb will work better. In 86, C10 trucks had carbed 4.3 engines. Jet it down and use a vacuum guage to tune it.

1985 Astro vans also had a carburetor on their 4.3's.

The 1986 elcamino and GMC caballero did too. Either way a small Holley or properly set up q jet from any sbc would probably be OK.

Any carb will not do........... oldsman said it correctly.
........or find a small 4BBL of another brand if you are able to. You will certainly need less than a 600 if it's not QuadraJet.

What is your max rpm going to be? A 4.3 is equal to 262 CI. Put in the cfm formula (CI X max rpm/ 3456 X Vol eff = CFM needed.)
Example: your 262 ci v6
262 X 6000rpm/3456 X 90%(est) = 409.375 cfm.
I would not run anymore than 450 cfm.
Holley makes 4 barrel carbs in 390 and 450 cfm.
One of those two carbs would work.
