Hello all,
I am 16 years old and am just starting my first truck resto\rod. I need some help looking at the brakes. Can someone take a look and let me know if they need to be replaced? It appears to me that the fellow I bought the truck from had reciently completed a brake job.

Also does anyone know what vehicle the axle came out of??

looks like rather new brakes to me...should be ok.

Rearend is probably from a 71-72 pickup, with the 5 lug axles.

I'm thinking older, and re-drilled from 6 lugs to 5. It could very well be the stock rear for the truck

How can you tell that? The holes in it look to be a 6 lugger on the top but on the bottom the holes appear to be too close together?

duh.....I comletely missed the original 6 lug holes. Ok, I've changed my mind, it's probably a 63-69 rearend....how wide is it from one axle flange to the other?

After looking again, I'm not so sure any more. That one hole is clearly off. Now I am thinking maybe it started out as a 5 hole and someone tried to re-drill it to 6 and screwed up? One possible way to tell - do the unused holes look like they ever had studs in them?

Another point - those brakes look rather wide. Does anyone know what year 2-3/4" started on the rears? I am pretty sure the earlier trucks were only 2".

I went to the parts store today with the shoes and pads in tow. THe parts guy told me the shoes were off of a 64C10 and the pads were from a 73C10.

While I was working on the front pads I took a few pics. I posted the pics for you URL is below. You can see where I placed a ruler mesauring the amount of spring travel and the width of the rotors. Looks like the travel is @ 10" which seems way low to me for a truck (or have I been watching to much Dukes of Hazard) and the rotor is 1.5" thick. Does this look like its off of a C10 or a Camaro like I thought?

Suggestions?

Is your engine in? If not the travel distance will be much less when the weight of the engine and tranny...as well as fenders\bumper\hood\etc are put back on....

Measure the rotor. 10 inch is passenger car. 12 inch is truck. You want TRUCK ! A 10 inch disk brake will not give you any better braking than well maintained drum brakes.

Mmk, Thanks.
The pictures of the completed rear are below. We painted the drum 'grabber green' and then put the Crager SS on there. Tell me what you think about the color.

Now we have to do the front brake. So, I'll probably have another round of questions coming.
