Most of you guys know that one of my tires from the 80's had a blow out on me, so I'm in the market for new tires. I went to Discount Tires, and the only correct size tires they have with a white sidewall (that's what's listed on my original window sticker), are these Hankook tires: Click Here For Link
My Brother-in-Law has Hankook tires on his truck and he loves them, but I just can't see showing an original nut & bolt car, with Korean-made tires... Don't read any prejudice or bigotry into this statement, there isn't a fiber of animosity in my body, I just know that the big three all had their favorite tire manufacturer, and I'm positive Hankook wasn't Chevy's choice in 1965.
Originally I was dead set on buying these tires: BF Goodrich 825x14 Tires, but they're glass ply tires ['nuff said]. Because my tires like to chirp in first & second gear, and the brakes are so darn good they lock up easily... That's why I'm in a pickle.
Looking for your experiences & advice,
Greg

You might also want to reach out to Diamond Back Tires, link Here.
That is where my dad is planning to get white walls for his 50' fleetline.

Coker Tire will have what you want I'm sure.
Coker has had more than one complaint about the quality of their tires, and it's been going on for some time now.
Do a Google search for "PROBLEMS WITH COKER TIRES" and you'll see what I mean. Personally, I would not buy any tires from them.

Tom,
Chuck is right, I'm looking for white side wall 825x14s. With my '65 I have a rule "If it's not on the window sticker or build sheet, it's not on my car"

Nick,
That's a VERY cool website... I love all the pictures. They have a set of Coopers, which I drove on as a kid & they served me very well, plus they have a narrower white wall and they're made in USA.
Those might be the ones for me,
Greg

Greg,
Did you read about the problem I recently had with Coopers in the other thread. I didn't research the link that Nick provided, but if they are Radials, and if you buy some keep an eye on the tire near where it meets the rim. Also, I would at least ask ahead to make sure that they will take them back if you have a problem. I've also read other problems about Coopers lately while I was researching info on my tires. Before this, I always thought they were a real good brand.

Hmm, Thanks for the heads-up Bill. Maybe I'll just keep the Hankook tires that I already paid for (but haven't had installed), and use extra Armor-All so the glare from the sun will prevent people from realizing they aren't American made tires.

Keep in mind that the tires from Diamondback are marked with metric numbers, not US type numbers. Not anything wrong with that - but thought you were going for originality!
Diamondback also cuts a rough spot in the tire and glues (vulcanizes) on the white wall.
They do look nice, and I'll probably get my redlines from them.

Im glad i saw this post. I was thinking of buying some of the Coker Silvertown biasply tires. May have to look at some radials instead.

There would be no way I would drive any car on bias ply tires with radials available. Even if the radials were pink...

I'm still a fan of Bias Ply. When Radials came out, I didn't see what the big deal was and personally didn't see that much of a difference using them. What I did find out is that they would throw your hubcaps off and crack a lot faster, as mentioned above and in the other thread we recently had.
I would be curious to know more of your favorable opinion towards them. (or anyones)

Bill,
growing up in a tire show, I can tell you there are pros and cons. fuel economy is worse with bias ply tires. they flex more and you lose force. bias ride better due to the flex. other suspension parts generally make up for the radials today. air pressure plays a role too. bias ply tires take less. thus the more hubcap fling for radials.
the big difference is with the number of flat tires.
bias tires generally have less liner on the inside before the belts. this can be problematic when trying to patch. you are basically vulcanizing to polyester and not to rubber.
bias ply tires also take tons of more weight to balance.

A few months ago, there was a comparison in "Muscle Car Review", where the same car ('70 Chevelle, if I remember correctly) was road tested with both bias-ply & radials.
I recall that conclusion was surprisingly close.
As MCR doesn't have a website, I'll have to look for the magazine & find the article. Maybe someone else has it handy.

I thought Hankook was made in China. I had them on my work van....one of em went bad at about 10K and made the beast pull, and another one wore out at the edges.
But, Discount warrantied them w/o blinking. But, Id rather not have to go back...except for the free rotations.

I recently purchased a set of BFG Traction T/A tires and they were marked "Made in Romania".
BFG is owed by michelin. Could be made anywhere
I Have Hankook Ventus 101 on my 62 Belair. Very nice tire. Still pretty new, time will tell.

Hankook makes a good tire. The Mileage plus is a nice smooth tire. The optimo H727 is a nice premium tire we sell at Wonder. We have alot of pretty happy customers who rave about how quiet they are, and how long they last compared to other tire makes.
We also sell the cooper Eldorado line of tires as an entry-mid grade tire, and they are a good all-around tire. Zero complaints with our Legend tours. USA made.
Don't assume Hankook's Korean made tires are no good, they really are a premium tire make. Its the Kumho's I'd stay away from. We used to sell the Solus KR21's and they are a horrible tire, way too soft, and short tread life.
