hi guys. I usually hang out in the 67-70 forum but not having much luck solving my problem and i believe our steering gear is the same so thought id see if you guys could help. I recently removed, cleaned out and installed new seals in my steering gear. Ive reinstalled it and i have problems. I have half a turn of play in the wheel before the wheels start turning and the steering is very stiff. I have done the usual left and right turning to bleed the gear but it has made no difference. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Air in the system will give you hard spots. Play is out of adjustment.

Did you just remove the upper bearing/seal assembly or did you disassemble the whole gear box?
Two possibilities are: 1) the top bearing seal assembly is not adjusted properly which will give you play, 2) the adjustment on the box itself is too tight which will cause hard steering.
If these parameters are ok then it is possible that one or more of the recirculating balls got out of the raceway.

Thanks for the info. Got fed up and removed it. looks like i did something wrong. Broken washer, displaced bearings and the gear is locked together. A right mess!! Think im going to take the plunge and get the fast ratio box ive been threatening to get.

Get some other opinions on that fast ratio steering gear. Many do not like the way it feels.
Makes the car 'dodgy'.

I put a 12.7-1 ration box in my 65' and it was the best upgrade I have ever done.
It isn't at all to dodgy, and I think it feels perfect. I did the conversion myself and it was easy. It drives so much nicer now, I highly recommend it.

I ordered a 14:1 box based on feedback from folks here.
Have not yet installed it though - hopefully within the next few weeks.
If I recall correctly my memory is excellent. My ability to access it is not.
