I recently took the heater box and blower off of my '68 Impala and found the same partial vin as stamped on the front of the block. Was this done on all '60's B-Bodies or just the later years? Has anyone else come across this before? Just wondering for general information's sake.

Stinger, It's not done through full size '64s. I know the Camaro guys talk about that "hidden" vin behind the heater box. Verne PS: have you followed up on that '63?

I haven't got a PM yet on the '63. Sounds good, though. My wife doesn't understand the feeling of HAVING to have a '63 Impala, and that my current project is just to get my mind off of the only car I ever really loved. Boy, out loud that sounds really sad, but true.lol.

The VIN on the 63 (besides the driver's door pillar) is on the frame, on the top between the rear bumper and axle, driver's side. It's there! Trust me, I have TWO 63's and I've seen the number on BOTH.... It is harder to find on rustier cars. Good luck.

Yes, we know it's on the frame, in 2 places. I said it's not on the BODY through '64.
Stinger. I sent the PM a long time ago. Go to "my home" on your screen and check. I can send it again if necessary.

I'm sorry Verne but I never received it. I've been checking everyday and I never saw it. Thanks for keeping me in mind.

When did Chevrolet start stamping partial VINs on HP engines? was it when the 348 came out in 58 or the first 409 in 61? Did they start the practice at the same time for the W motors and the HP small blocks?

For US assembled full size cars, the practice began with the '62 model year on 300hp and greater engines.

Thanks Verne, but is this related to the calendar year 1962? Someone is telling me that a 409 car built in Dec 61 will not have the partial VIN on its engine.

The partial VIN stampings on the body started right after the Motor Vehicle Safety Standard act was passed by congress. It was part of the mandated things that the automobile dealers needed to do to identify cars where the VIN was removed. The frame stampings that go back to the 1930's are in locations many times that require the body be removed to see them. I remember that the 1968 Camaro had the VIN stamped in the cowl and it was clearly visible by looking through the cowl screen between the wiper pivots.

As I said Carl, the practice was supposed to be started at the beginning of the '62 model year, so a '62 built in Dec, '61 should have the VIN derivitive on the block. Not all plants and personnel followed that directive 100% of the time though. It was not a procedure that was inspected so a worker could slack off on that job if he wanted to.
I've seen legit hi-perf blocks without the VIN, but it was supposed to be there.
