I don't know about Texas but in Massachusetts if the insurance company paid off on the theft they would be the owners not the original owner. Be interesting to see if the insurance company steps in and claims it.

At the time of the theft, he didn't have insurance on the vehicle. You have to keep in mind that was 40 years ago, and you didn't have a mandatory insurance laws on the books. It was a different time.
My ex had a car stolen, and it was recovered a number of years later. She notified the insurance company that it had been found, and they told her that they were not interested in taking possession of the car, since the file was closed, and sent off to some storage area, along with the title. We never claimed the car, and it was eventually sold for scrap by the impound yard. It wasn't worth the hassle of applying for a replacement title, and the possible ramifications if the insurance company ever wanted it back. I would love to have the car today. It was a 1964 GTO convertible!

Theft insurance on a car is called comprehensive insurance. It would not be required by a state, but rather a lein holder if a loan was on the car. In this case, the owner may have owned the car out right and didn't have full insurance coverage. 100% legal.
BTW, I enjoyed the story. Thanks for posting.

Nice story, but the cops didn't want to reopen the case and SOLVE it because it would add to their statistics for this year????? That says a lot about the priorities of "law enforcement".

I don't believe that this was a matter of "statistics", but more of a matter of where to look to find the old report. Back then the files were all paper, and once a year, everything was boxed up and put into storage. Finding that one report must have taken a lot of time, and as we all know, with budget cuts, the police don't have lots of time to chase down old reports. In fact, many times, the old papers was destroyed years ago. My 1969 Z28 was stolen in 1973, and I doubt that they could find the report today, if the car was ever found. I still have the ownership papers, since it wasn't covered with insurance, but that might not be enough to get it back if it were located. This is why I get upset when someone comes to this site with a VIN number problem, and someone suggests that they find another car for VIN "transplant" if the other car can be had with a title.

Glad to see the owner got it back, but that's gotta hurt for the car dealer. All the info available would have shown this to be a clean car. Some how you would think that all old thefts would be in the stolen car database. Makes buying a classic car a bit more risky!

You're right about risk. When I was tracking down the original owners of my car, I hoped that it wasn't stolen and shipped to Australia to unsuspecting Aussies. Luckily, even though it was actually stolen and wrecked in the front end in the early 70's, it was recovered immediately and repaired.

Like I said n previous post back than my grandfather sold cars you knew someone with a junk yard you switched tags and titles all day. It was common in the used car world of things. Now with the way vins work and carfax and stuff can't switch numbers like a car from back than. We all agree to dislike the thieves. My 81 regal I bought from woman late 70s early 80s? She drive it from virgina family made her sell it. I bought as my first car in 97.
This odd story I titled the car in my moms name chalet insurance I was younger it worked good that way. In 2001 in cook county illinois Chicago at currency exchange I titled 2 cars. The 81 regal and 95 ford aspire they mixed the vins up and put the 95 ford on regal title. I didn't catch till I moved to NWI never needed check it because Illinois vins never checked I didn't think they switch vins on the title. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this..

There was another story like this 10 years ago or so, it was a 68 vette being sold overseas and a serial number check for the export turned up an old stolen car file.

A couple of months ago a guy found his early Camaro for sale on Ebay and was able to get it back 30+ years after it was stolen.
