I'm sure this question has been asked before but, I can't seem to find the thread.

So after driving around the block a couple of times the oil indicator light comes on. Sufficient amount of oil. Timing is set. New oil pressure sensor.

If anyone has any other ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

install an oil pressure gauge using a T fitting so you can monitor both oil actual oil pressure and the light. if the pressure drops below 3 or 4 puondsthe light will come on. culprits could be a almost stopped up oil pickup, bad pump, bad bearings etc. does the engine have a bearing noise when cranked after sitting overnight? that would indicate worn bearings.

Start with the most minor thing. I've had brand new oil sending units that were bad off the shelf.

As mentioned install an oil pressure gauge to monitor the situation. Hope you are not starving the engine of oil.

I'll try it out and post my findings.

Thanks for the reply

well I installed the t fitting and a mechanical oil pressure gauge. I just took it around the block tonight. Its readings were 20 psi idle and 30 psi as I cruised around the block. I'll run it longer tomorrow and see what happens.

So what was your idiot light doing while read the new oil pressure gauge?

no action on the light, but i'll keep monitoring it and post my findings.

I changed my oil pressure sending switch 3 times before I got one that worked properly. The first two were auto part store replacements made in some far off land. The third one was a made in USA Delco product that I paid a lot of money for on ebay, but it works the way that it should.

Still have a little bit of air in the line, I'll have to bleed it. Will post the results afterwards.

Air in the mechanical oil pressure gauge tube is normal. It does not affect the accurancy of the pressure readings.

So now that you have had the mechanical gauge for awhile, and asumming you still have the original idiot light issue, what does the gauge say when the oil light comes on?

so after driving the car around for a bout 20 minutes or so the oil pressure gauge slowly dropped down to less than 10 psi before I parked it.

Does the oil pressure drop to "less than 10 psi" when you are driving the car, or when the car is stationary at an idle? How much mileage on the engine and what weight oil are you using? 6 cylinder or V-8???

oil pressure drops at idle, new engine less han 100 miles on it, v8 sbc 400, 10w30 oil.

when I accelerate the oil pressure goes back up
> 20 psi

Normal condition.... nothing to worry about. Don't forget to change oil and filter at 1000 miles and to add zddp additive to the oil.

While I agree the pressure will fluxuate with engine rpm, those readings are a bit low, especially for a fresh engine. At highway speeds 40 psi is typical. My 327 with a new HP oil pump runs close to 60 at 55 mph and 25 -30 at idle (10w30 oil).

I would say either a tired oil pump or worn main bearings should be suspect with those low readings.

At idle, in gear, with a stock oil pump, it will run a bit under 10psi. No big deal. At cruising speed it should get up around 30-40psi. Plenty of pressure to get the job done. Every sb I've had with a stock oil pump ran similar numbers.

doubleE, your numbers are typical of a high volume pump.

I thought the original poster's oil press readings were a bit low too. My completely stock 327 (250hp) gets very much the same as Eric with 15W40 mineral oil. Once warm she sits on 20psi at idle (in drive at 450-500rpm) and 60psi on the highway. When cold the oil pressure goes over 80psi with a few revs. The engine was rebuilt in 1987 (12K miles ago) and the receipt does not include any mention of an oil pump. Are there any other reasons for high oil pressure which might cause these readings?
Cheers, Carl.

Stock pump bypass can only bypass so much cold-thick oil, so the pressure goes up when cold. It has no where else to go. Once warmed and thinner, the oil will bypass based on the spring and shim on the spring in the pump.

Carl, the pressure numbers in your post are identical to a 350 I had years ago with the high volume pump. Seems, (in some local shops) that the oil pumps are replaced with high volume as standard practice. I don't know why, though. My current 454 runs under 10psi at idle (500rpm) and 40-45psi at cruise (3000rpm) warm.
