I have 1963 Chevrolet Impala it's got the orig eng from the numbers I got. Seemed liked a fit everything was in line like it should be.

However I need to know what transmission I have, I don't have a lift. Reason I need to know is I'm going to have it rebuild I'm calling for prices. Thanks I'm still new to these cars take care everyone

We need more info. Is the car an automatic or manual transmission car?

Take a look at what the shape of the pan is like. If you can take a picture of the pan from the bottom. Post that picture here--you'll find out real fast which trans you have.

1= Powerglide
3=TH350
4=Th400

If original, it would be a 2 speed Powerglide, the only auto offered in 63, aluminum case. If you drive your car, you can tell if it is a 2 speed.

As of now the reverse is out and it leaks fluid like crazy.

When this occurs do some fix the transmission to get the reverse back if so how much is that option?

How much is a full rebuild usually?

Last question how can you tell if it's orig or what era the powerglide is from thanks everyone.

Take it out and get it completely rebuilt, unless you want to spend even more and upgrade to a 7004r or200r4. With one gear broken and lots of leaks, the transmission must have a lot of miles on it and needs a complete rebuild. I would recommend having your original rebuilt as opposed to an off the shelf transmission, unless you want to go the upgrade route.

My book says that in 63 the assembly date was stamped in the center of the pan. Odds are it is the original transmission, as they are often upgraded to TH350's or in more modern times, the 7004r or 200r4.

I pulled a 200R4 out of a 80's Monte for $250 a couple years ago and through it on another old Buick Regal I had. If money is an issue, I would go that route. It has Overdrive and you'll get better gas mileage. A tranny rebuild can cost upwards of 3k.

Get an estimate from a good trans shop that is local to you. Go in and tell them what you've got and ask for a ballpark estimate.

Also, Powerglides can be built to hold a lot of HP nowadays. And shifting can be made snappier too--lots of changes in tranny technology since '63/

That sounds high. I got my 700r4 rebuilt for $1400 from a respected shop with upgraded parts and that was at California prices. Just guessing, but I would think a Powerglide, removed from the car, could be done even cheaper. Perhaps in the 500-900 range
