I am pretty sure I only need a solenoid for the starter on my 04 Express 3500 van, but none of the local parts shops sell the solenoid - only a complete starter. Am I missing something? Rock Auto lists a solenoid for my vehicle, but is there any reason not to replace only the solenoid? Thanks.

No reason not to replace just the solenoid if you're pretty sure that is what's wrong.

I was wrong about Rock Auto - when you click on the solenoid heading it takes you to the starter relay. So I guess nobody sells the solenoid.

I thought that might be the case, but figured if you were right and could get the solenoid only, there would be no harm in just replacing it.

If it's the gear reduction mini starter, for some reason, I don't see the solenoid offered many places. Maybe it's not easily DIY-replaceable? I've never tried. Anyhow, NAPA does carry it; Echlin part # ECH ST-170.

But at $60, you might just consider replacing the whole starter! DB Electrical sells the whole GM mini starter for $60!
