My son called me from Disney World today and his 2003 Suburban is making a chirping noise when it warms up. He said when he first starts it you can't hear it, but within a few seconds you can hear it and it gets louder.
He said with the radio on you can barely hear it, but when stopped at a light or going slow (like when in Disney) other people in cars were looking around to see what the sound was.
He said it still drives and shifts like a dream. He said the noise sometimes sounds like the fins on the torque converter hitting something.
He is pretty mechanical, but he is 1500 miles from home and only has a few tools. He said he will jack the truck up and use a spare for a jack stand and then pull the inspection plate and see if he can see if a bolt backed out or something easy.
He called a shop and they told him the trans would cost 3k and it would be $800 to install it. He told me he wants to go buy a tranny and install it himself, or rent a trailer and tow it back home.
I told him I would ask here if there is anyone that knows what he can check or if anyone lives close enough that he could borrow a jack and some stands to check the truck out.
Obviously this has a high priority for him, so any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if this will matter or not, but the truck is a 1500 series with a 4l60E and 4 wheel drive.

Sounds can travel - before he assumes it's the transmission he might want to slip the belt off and try running it for a moment without it.

Sorry, I forgot to mention he did tell me he pulled the belt and the noise was still there.

This is an age-old, classic Chevy "noise" and that shop is just flat trying to screw 'im out of four grand.
Tell him to go ahead and drive the truck home and then put a new flywheel in it, as his is cracked.
He can just back the transmission/transfer case rearward, as a unit, about 4", which will allow enough room to slide a new one up and in. The slightly protruding "lip" at the center of the flywheel goes to the rear.

We spoke again last night and he is going to bring it to a guy he met that has a shop. He said he seems like a good guy, so we'll see how that works out.
I figure it's better to spend a few dollars and see if he can tell what's up. I hope he can get the truck back home without incident and take care of the problem himself.
