Hi all, still looking for a Nomad to buy, saw one today on ebay that has a rare "tailgate rear speaker option". It's a black '57, survivor, all stock but has this rear speaker built into the rear tailgate panel with a switch mounted on the dash. Was this a real option? Sure looks right... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1957-CHEVY -NOMAD-SU...

Anything is possible. It looks right for sure. At least the speaker switch on the dash looks correct. Nice car.

The speaker grill doesn't look like an original. The Accessories manual does not list this option for a nomad. What is the life expectancy of the speaker in the tailgate as water makes its way in there? As stated the switch is correct for a rear seat speaker option 987609.

Thank you, In all the years of longing for a Nomad, ( 40+ years ) I have never seen a "stock" rear speaker in the tailgate. Not that the dealer didn't install it for the original owner, as a dealer will / would install anything for money. I have just never seen one before now...

I'd highly doubt that is a factory installed speaker in the gate. As you said, the dealer would do just about anything back in the day, so that is probably what happened. Still looks like a very nice Nomad though. Even if the speaker were factory installed, without documentation or a code on the cowl tag indicating it, it doesn't make the vehicle worth any more.

There were no rear speakers in wagons until '59.
The "switch" is original, but not intended for wagons.

This part of the narrative in the eBay listing is kind of funny.
I WANTED TO KEEP THIS CAR BUT MY FAMILY IS GROWING AND IT IS TIME FOR A BIGGER VEHICLE. I WOULD ENTERTAIN A POSSIBLE TRADE: A 63-67 CORVETTE COUPE.

Maybe he's planning on ditching the family and running off with his girl friend in the vette?

Yeah I noticed that too guys.....bidding has slowed to $30K, what do you guys think it will go for, with the dual quads, in it's "unrestored condition" , leaks and all?

THIS CAR IS UNRESTORED AND MAY HAVE LOTS OF ORIGINAL PAINT.
What looks rare to me is the trans pan shape and trans crossmember

Well, I wasn't looking that close. Looks to be an original trans in the parts pile. But since I glanced at the car photos again, I'll add in the power window switches and probably what's inside the doors too as being "rare".

I don't see an oil fill tube in the manifold either.

The Nomad went for $30,300, I stopped at $20K as the car needed engine, trans, paint, interior, tires, wiring, etc........but hey, they're only original once
