If still on the car with the hood attached, open the hood to stretch the springss as far as you can. Next slide small blocks of wood in between the coils. Now slowly close the hood. The blocks of wood prevent the spring from retracting and should become loose enough to slip off the hinges.

I loop a big rope around the outside hook of the spring with the hood open and pull it into place. It's not that hard when you can get a grip on it. Comes off that way also.
