Aight guys, back with some more questions.

So my intake manifold is off at sandblasting, and the guy (and myself) were wondering what is under the plate on the bottom, and if it would be worth removing it? Not sure what it is, exactly.

Second question, can i use my old brake shoes or should i get new ones? MY dad thinks they might have asbestos lining, since they're from way back when, and he's not sure if that's legal or not.

Oh, and is it worth rebuilding my generator or should i be fine?
I can't seem to get the wide end nut off, either.

Did you have any problems with the generator? You can have a shop check it and the volt reg out. If you want the peace of mind of having everything in the charging system done at one time, rebuild the gen and replace the volt reg. Are you having trouble with the nut that holds the pulley on? That would be a 15/16" nut, you may need a 3 jaw gear puller to remove the pulley and the front frame (remove the shaft key before pulling the frame!). Be careful, the frame is aluminum and is easily broken.

Brake shoes: forget "legal", think "health safety" and replace them. Turn the drums while you're at it.

I can't help on the intake question, sorry.

And you might get a better response if you posted questions separately with a descriptive subject line, that's been my experience.

Good luck.

The plate on the underside of the intake manifold is the oil splash shield. It's purpose is to keep oil from coking on the the hot exhaust heat riser cross-over. I'd leave it on there but it would probably be a good idea to pressure wash underneath the shield to make sure there isn't any sand residue.

Richard is right on the money, it's a heat shield.
They were rivited on so it's a hassle to remove them but I would make the effort. Just think how many years of sludge has acumulated in there! And Richard makes a good point that if the maniflod has been sandblasted, there's going to be some trapped sand in there too.

I have drilled and used self tapping screws to reattach the shield to the intake.

Whenever I use an iron intake manifold I remove the rivits on the shield and find a bunch of cooked oil. After acid dipping I sandblast the burnt oil off and replace the tin shield. I like to tap the rivit holes for screws and loctite the screws. No chance of retaining crud under the shield to possibly get out and into the oil.
