Hi folks,
Can you confirm if the front and rear brake drums are the same on a 57?
I have at least 20 drums, how do you tell if they are still good or not?
Thanks!

For a Chevy, yes they are the same after removed from the front hubs.
Visual inspection for heat/stress cracks and measuring of the diameter to make sure they are still within specs.

Shop Manual specifies .060" max oversize, but the max should be cast into the outer edge of the face of the drum.(but this may be a later DOT requirement)

Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't know what .060" max oversize means.
My guess is that I should measure the thickness of the drum "wall", but I have no clue what the thickness should be.
Thanks again

You have to measure the inside diameter of the drum. Take them to a auto supply that turns drums and they can measure them. They have a gauge something like this.

Hello;
Better yet, just buy new drums, they arn't that expensive!
Nothing is too expensive where safety is concearned!
You could sell off your old drum supply to a scrap metal place and get enough $$ for new drums.

That requirement must have started in later years.
Mine are all covered up on the car so didn't look at them, just remembered that some I have worked on were marked.
