Can anyone tell me how the parking brake cables fasten to the rear backing plates? There are 2 holes in the cable brackets and 2 holes in the backing plate, but I don't see how to fasten them together. I couldn't find any pages in the parts catalogs or shop manuals that illustrate these parts. I'm thinking that maybe they have to be put together with the brake drums removed. If anyone can point me to a picture/diagram or maybe just crawl under and take a look, I would be most grateful.
By the way, the stainless parking brake cables I got from Inline Tube were of excellent quality and workmanship. NICE parts!
Thanks for your help folks! I may get this running by wedding time in September after all!

Mike,
I'm afraid I am confused by the terminology. Here are some pictures from under my '54. If you can direct me to the exact area you are interested in, I'll snap a picture and post it (It's parked outside).

There is a 2-piece flat bracket the goes around the parking brake cable and bolts to the outside of the brake backing plate where the cable enters into the brake stuff under the brake drum. I'd like to know if you see a bolt with a nut on it, just a bolt head, or something else that holds the plate to the backing plate. If you have your head near the bottom of the diff and you turn and look at either brake backing plate where the cable inters, that's what I'm trying to "see".
Thanks for the help.

Should look like this, you'll see the heads of the bolts, the nuts go on the inside of the backing plate. there's also a dust gasket required between the backing plate and the ER bracket.

Mike,
I snapped a bunch of pictures. Let me know if the one from Idaho doesn't tell you all you need to know. It was hard to get good pictures with the leaf springs in the way.

That's it in the lower right corner. Looks like 5/16" bolts with nuts inside (as you pointed out). I took the old cables apart and I think the dust gaskets may be made of leather.
Thanks for the picture. Now all I have to do is put it back together!
You gotta love the helpful folks on ChevyTalk!

The "gaskets" they sell you today are crap. I should have just made my own out of something. They are like very thin pieces of foam, but they did appear to seal well enough to get the job done. I'd rather have the leather!

The original gaskets came out in pretty good shape. I thought they weer made of leather. I used an old thick leather belt to cut some duplicates and soaked them in linseed oil. Should last longer than I will!

The replacement gaskets i got from the Filling Station are thick felt and seem to seal up pretty well....time will tell.

Gaskets??? Gaskets??? Mine didn't have no stinkin' gaskets. Guess I'll have to take 'em off and make something up.

yeah
the originals were thin dried out leather or something like that but were dust when i took the parking brake off the rear drums. The replacements are thicker felt and the shop manual actually mentioned it in one section....somewhere.....
