Is easier to install the pitman arm before you install the steering column in the car or after you install the steering column if you mark it real good where it will be on the steering box?
it is a 54 chevy car.

I would install the arm last.

The shop manual calls for torquing the pitman arm nut to around 100 pounds as I recall. For that reason I installed mine before I put the unti back in the car. I locked the pitman arm in a very good vice to hold it. Other wise you would be torquing against the worm and sector which I felt was probably not a good idea.

I have installed a lot of Pitman arms without damaging the steering gear. Every one has there own technique.
